1200 Gears Out Of Sync !? Fcuk Me What Next!?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Kel, Jun 27, 2014.

  1. Finally the gear sensor has arrived part number 55241512C.
It took Pro-Twins 9 days to get me one :Banghead:
And a at cost of £88.44 with the VAT and carriage.

Will be fitting today. Pics to follow with an edit.
Note: You need a special socket set or an Fuel injector type socket, as the sensor is effectively a bolt with a wire coming out of the top.
We used a GEARRatchet by Vortex sourced from Halfords.

You need to disconnect the sensor under the riders seat and cut the cable tie under the side panel, to get the wire/connector down to the sensor. By passing the socket over the wire and then the wrench so that it hangs in front of the swinging arm. Then undo from under the bike.
Not easy and almost certainly very difficult if not impossible with most other socket sets.

Operating the sensor out in the air - total travel on the nipple is 6mm.:Bookworm:

Fully extended is First Gear, 2-3mm depressed is Neutral with the remaining 3mm of travel gives gears 2,3,4 and 5. Fully depressed is 6th gear.:Doctor:
There is a tiny amount of wear, almost a polish on the old sensor nipple.
Given that 3mm of travel is required for a 1-Neutral indication change this is not the cause of the miss-indication issue.
IMHO either the old switch is breaking down with heat (as the fault only occurs when the engine is warm) or the other part is worn (I really hope not).

12Nm of torque to put it back in, with a little oil on the o-ring.
    Static test...all ok.

    Next a test ride.:Nailbiting:

  2. Ok....so last Wednesday I go down to get new sensor fitted at the same time 7500 service due which is another story one worth reading which I shall be posting under separate listing. Gears seem fine now anyway so sensor is was....however after getting back home and checking service what a rip off.

  3. Test ride to Newlands confirms that this orignal sensor was the fault.
Replacing the sensor solved the problem.
No adjustment or dealer support required.

  4. Great write up Aircon, I have a new sensor to fit shortly, looked for that gear ratchet on Halfords website but can't find anything - what size is it, I will just get an injector socket to do the job? Cheers

  5. I had the gear sensor problem on my mts1200s. The surging is because the ecu is being told it is in first gear when infact you might be in 4th etc, so the fuelling is all over the place. Once a new one is fitted there is a running procedure required to getbthe new one calibrated. Unfortunately i cannot remember it but you do have to go through all the gears to reset it. I know this as when the sensor was replaced i collected the bike, and i asked the dealer if the ecu needs attention etc and they said no. Well 40 miles latervthe problem was back. They dutifully collected the bike, asked a few questions and found outbtherevis a procedure to reset. This happened anyear or so ago, but now they say they are seeing alot of gear sensor problems across different newer models.

  6. Anyone know the socket size..........and the reset procedure?!!

  8. Went to Halfords to get an open sided socket to fit new sensor......they had every size but 17mm! Went home ground a slot into a deep socket and offered it up, it fouled the swing arm, ground it down and got it in then extension piece fouled swing arm!! Dropped shock from front mount and still no joy, I'll be back to the grinder tonight to shorten the socket.

    Nothing's ever easy is it?!

  9. I'm with ya there £250 for the 1st year oil service ??

  10. It's only had the exhaust flapper and a gear sensor go ?? Thats feck all ya big drama queen !! ;)

  11. re
    Cam-bus??>> Can-bus >> Cannot-bus I dont know how to fix this
old Ducatis the neutral switches didnt work either? but it didnt matter?
but now when your engine maps go, and the gps and 3axis inertial pack up, we are free of big-brother as soon as the neutral light fails?
hope you got a good set of Keihiens under the bed along with coils and points off a commando; in case of a bit of magnetic pulse over your way

  12. exhaust Flapper??
    we talking Ducatis or YPVS?

  13. The butterfly valve just in front of end can, they all seize on multi's

  14. The vaunted Fluke uses minute current (ma) to measure resistance; a piece of wire mono filament folded back on its self and held by the alligator clips supplied with the test leads will provide a good contact as the folded end has a twitch to ensure continuous good contact in female side and between the plastic housing and the male pin, alternatively auto motive spike tools will release the pins and sockets from the housings. spare pins and sockets can
Thanks have decided not to buy a Multistrada in this life time? scary

  15. All done...eventually!
New sensor played fine straight away, no need to go through the re-set procedure

  16. thanks for the info, whole new world, from the Ducatis i owned.

  17. I had this on my 2011 multi they replaced clocks under warranty...the "dim indicator" was a comon fault they told me in DMC Manchester and clocks needed to be replaced.
