For what it's worth, I've just fitted my 749 with a Motobatt MBT12B4, £49. Can't comment on how well it performs over the years :)
I'd venture a guess it's excess lubricant from the chain. You may want to check whether you can trace it thus: lubricant gets onto front sprocket...
