Cagiva Elefant 750 1987

  1. Greetings all, Just read with more than a small tear in the eye, the Elefant experiences. I still have Nellie the 750 Lucky explorer, and can sympathise with the trials and tribulations on parts sourcing, and the TLC needed to keep these old girls going. Parts are getting scarce, and those which are available are getting expensive. Nellie comes up for MOT soon, so I will no doubt be relaying my experiences on getting her through. It's still worth it for the kudos of owning a bit of Cagiva memorabilia, and the grin when you're earoling around A and B roads. Keep the faith. Mahout

  2. FYI. Nellie is a 1996 built, 1998 regd Lucky Explorer 750. Fairly standard, but in her life has had fork seals, all rear suspension bearings replaced, front and rear disks replaced, and HH pads fitted. HEL brake lines, and KTM hand guards fitted with bolts to the bar ends. Oh, and engine strip and rebuild as a precaution following alternator bolt backing off (naughty Nellie). Otherwise, gives big grins. Mahout

  3. See you at Boxhill this year Mahout?

  4. Just got my rear shock back from its rebuild. £360 but completely rebuilt. Had the remote reservoir removed too.

Going to start rebuilding the rear linkage but need to send the swing arm off to be stripped and reanodized.

Woundering whether to just send the engine off to be rebuilt rather than attempting myself.

  5. Couple of hours in the garage this afternoon and managed to get the heads off the cylinders. Valve clearances were well off.

Can see where a stud has obviously been drilled out previously. That'll be how the large chunk was missing of the exhaust outlet.

  7. And the shiny refurbished shock

  8. shame about the port Matt - there are still two barrels on E-bay I believe?

  9. Worth a grand. Especially as its registered Cat C, you could chuck a ton of money at it and it will always lack providence because it's been a write off.

  10. Write off or not, there's not so many around, hence why I've just bought it :upyeah:

  11. My Lucky 750 is due for delivery tomorrow afternoon, can't wait! Any good Elefant forums about, I can't seem to find one worth looking at. I've joined a couple of the adventure bike types but not really Ele specific.

  12. 'EAB' is the best (English speaking) of what's out there, but it's not a conventional website which is a real pain if you want to access archives quickly.

  13. Thanks Chris, I had seen that one but it's a pain to use. Every time I search on my phone, when I go back it takes me back to the first page!

  14. this is partly why I tried to cultivate a 'base' on here but as you know it takes 5 years plus with good thread posting to amass any decent Technical content.

  15. Nice find Chris! Well mine arrived today and I'm very pleased. As the guy had stated it would only run on one cylinder. So up to the workshop for a quick look. Taking the bodywork off is a bit time consuming but easy enough. When I disconnected the right hand fuel pipe I discovered that the shut off valve doesn't work. However what poured out was water not fuel! I stuck a tub underneath it and got at least 500ml out before fuel started to flow! So, I drained both carbs down, removed the coils and cleaned all the connectors up in the loom. Did my usual earth mod to the reg/rec unit, stuck some new plugs in and it fired on the button :) It runs super smooth so I'm well chuffed. Out of interest I put the old plugs back in as the rear looked horrible and tried it again, nothing from the rear ;-) I even had time to remove a load of obsolete old wiring, wire up the heated grips and also wire up the sat nav! It needs a puncture sorting and a fork seal and I'll give it a test ride.
