1200 DVT Hypothesis: Michelin Road 5 Causing Weave At Speed?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Fire3500, Apr 24, 2019.

  1. Those Pilot roads have so much tread I wouldn’t honestly be surprised if it’s the tyre and the bike moving around on the block pattern.

I’m not really a road rider but I have ridden on them. Awful feel from the front end. Very vague and iffy

  2. My 2013 suffered high speed weave on various tyres. Even observed and commented on at a track day. This, after pro set up with different forks internals.

  3. I have had PR5's since they came out and have done 10's of thousands of miles (and as little motorway as possible) on them on various Multi's and never had an issue with any of them. The PR5 will tramline when cold but once warmed up they are fine. Before the PR5 it was PR4's, they would "cup" especially on the front but the 5's don't do that. The wear rate is about the same but the PR5 maintains grip until they are down to the 1mm level (I tend to change at 2mm in any case), the PR4 would get nervous at 2 or 3 mm and would let you know that they are worn! :astonished:.
I am told the Roadtec 01's are good and have a slightly quicker turn in, really must try a set one day.

  4. Totally agree with above post. But I also mention that I have had my MTS1200s since 2013, done about 40,000 miles on Michelin’s, Pirelli’s, 90% of my riding is out of town , top speed plenty of times with and without luggage. I have never ever had any weave at all?

  5. Not to be too nit picky but these tires are called Road 5 or R5, not PR5 or RP5

  6. Have they dropped the Pilot bit then?

  7. Yes, but everyone knows what you mean if you say PR5. Technically just the Road5 now though.

Have a pair sitting in my shed to replace the part worn ones on my Mutley. Should have had them on an be carving up the mountain roads in Corsica this very morning... but they're still in the shed

  8. Just been on a 4 day Germany based trip. Loads of riding with and without panniers(stuffed!).
Came back via a mixture of roads, good, bad etc. Some motorway too. Had a nice detour via Chimay, an old F1 track. Turning right onto the longest straight, I took my Mut flat out, in the interests of science(;)).
Not a hint of a weave or wobble.
These are my 3rd set which I’d happily recommend to anyone.

  9. Do you suffer from a bit of 'chain rub' on the very edge of the sidewall?

Road5s have always done this on my 1260s, nothing drastic, just a light touch of it. Third set waiting to go on, used the same tyre on my MV and the VFR before that.

  10. No chain rub whatsoever.

Later, I’ll take a pic of chain-tyre gap so you can see what’s what.

  11. Chain to tyre gap pic. This is about 10-8mm

  12. I had a weave on my bmw s1000xr and on my 1260s both with panniers on upped my suspension to 2 passengers it’s only a slight weave at speed above 120 and when u throttle off it disappears I check chain never thought about that always thought rear suspension tyres panniers

  13. 2 passengers!

  14. The YouTube vid in the link below probably answers all of your wobble and weave queries

I guess weave can be caused by all kinds of things. Poor weight distribution, wrong pressures, bad or duff tyre, poor road conditions?

Back in the late 00’s I managed to get some Gucci Dunlop slicks. The guy I bought them off warned me of the ‘Dunlop Weave’ phenomenon. I thought nothing of it at the time but I soon found out he wasn’t joking!! First time out on them was at Anglesey and the run between church and rocket was terrifying, the wobble seemed to start from the rear! Really weird, until you got used to the fact they would weave a little but would not go into full on tank slappers. I had a day with Simon Crafer at Jerez and both he and Plater where telling tales of the problems Dunlop had in solving the issue (I think the Ntec sorted it) So long story short, it could well be the tyres, or many other things, like pressures, duff tyre, weight distribution on the bike, poor roads.

So, my post is probably no help at all really!

  15. My GS arrived with the Roadtecs, haven't been that impressed by them TBH.

  16. Had mich pr5s on my mutley 1200 dvt using different pressures F& B Sorted any issues.

  17. I've had them on or a few hundred miles so far.

As already stated turn is quicker, though on slower stuff like roundabouts it feels like the front turns and drops in and then the bike follows, unlike the R5's where the whole bike drops and turns. Its a little disconcerting at first.

I can understand you not being that impressed by them, the R5's always struck me as being an impressive tire, the roadtecs don't. However, they haven't actually done anything wrong or bad, and I haven't once over shot a corner and not hit the apex, which happened a fair few times on the R5's - maybe because they don't instil the confidence the R5's did, and so I don't push as hard, however, I seem to be able to still carry the same rate of knots everywhere, maybe its the faster turn in coming into play, I don't know.

I haven't been out in the rain yet so cannot comment on wet grip, they carnt be any worse than the R5 as they were awful IMO.

Still on the fence as to what I fit next, I'll see how I get on with these and go from there, though it would be back to R5's if anywhere I think as they are very good.

  18. Must be on my 4th set of R5's. Work well, always.

  20. Nearing the end of another set of Road 5’s. 5000m out of this set and still performing very well. These have been my lowest distance set so far.
I do have a bit of tramlining over white lines etc and there is some movement when pushing on. However, though only showing 2.4mm total tread depth left, they still have superb grip in the wet.
Interestingly, as I’ve been caught out a bit recently in wet weather, I’ve only had one slide and that was whilst upright on dual carriageway overbanding.
Another new set in storage ready to go on.
    I run 34/36 front 36/38 rear.
Anywhere in that area and I’m quite happy.
