V4 Pikes Peak Front Preload Adjustment No Cheese

  1. I'm guessing but I'd imagine there are quite a few more turns than 5 to increase the pre load. You'll be able to keep adding until the adjuster hits a hard stop.

  2. Oh, so possibly this may be set from the factory on the “soft” side

  3. Factory front fork preload is set at 5mm, the maximum preload is 20mm, one turn (360°) equates to 1mm. Andy

  4. Set mine up the other day, was only set at one turn from right out, so a lot of sag, went for a quick ride to Chris Walker this afternoon, it's much better now. Set the rear properly as well for my weight.

  5. Where do you get this detail from Andy?

  6. The owner's manual, page 123. Andy

  7. I applaud your suspension set-up initiatives.
Suspension set-up, especially SAG and having the correct springs is often overshadowed by bling.
At 80~85kg fully kitted, you're in the zone. Any rider significantly outside this range would require a spring swap.
    About your fork travel:
Short on fork travel may be a compression setting set too high or even a rear rebound setting set too high.
More importantly: What's your Rider SAG percentages fore and aft?
The fore-aft balance should be close to equal although some, myself included prefer having a bit more SAG up front producing a slight forward pitch.
Although this chart and settings thereof are on a manual Ohlins suspension set-up for my Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak, you may find it useful.
FYI: I'm 177 lbs / 80 Kg in full leather gear (160 lbs / 72.5 Kg without). No pillion, All twisty back roads riding. Angel GT tires.
As you can see, I'm using 3/4 of the fork travel measured to the bottom-out mark above the fork casting and that's while riding on smooth roads without pushing it. If riding more aggressively or on rougher roads, the zip-tie drops another half inch. In an emergency stop, my zip-tie drops to just above the bottom-out mark.
