Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by RickyX, Sep 3, 2020.

  1. I think the replacement part is actually for an ST3 if I remember correctly.

  2. @RickyX @chrisw
    Found this thread invaluable, thanks.
Daft q - I’ve got the fuel filter on order, already have the new O ring. Just can’t source “Oetiker 123 single ear clips”
Lots of different numbers, just not 123.
Could you help me find those?

    SteinDinse part:
    Should I get the 51020032A or the 51020032A-Z ?
Not much difference in price but It’s not clear to me what the difference is.

And (sorry), the extra wire (earth), did you just ask a mate to make that up for you back then Ricky? There is perhaps someone who could do it for me, but might have to give it a go.

    TIA
    Caroline

  3. I used double ear clamps. I compressed them with some pincers (not the genuine tool). From memory you need 11-13mm. EBay is your friend.

  7. i have 51020032A and im sure thats what the others got based on the previous thread on this. note that there is a earth wire that needs to be added as long as formed part of your original assembly. if so, i now have received the terminals so will get mine made up soon and show the end result

  8. the parts catalogue has the number for the single use clamps and you need a pincer tool if you want to get it factory

  9. @RC1
forgive me, but which parts catalogue?

  10. Google 749 parts catalogue

  12. Hi, see below.

First is the standard pump removed showing the “extra” black wire:

Next shows where I cut and removed the black connector.
When I installed the replacement wiring, I removed the spade connector and crimped the new black wiring to the old black earth lead into the same connector to replicate how it was originally. This shows the cut loom of the original.

Here is the P/No I ordered:

  14. they're called mikalor clamps, and there's a specific tool to clamp / unclamp them.
The clamp will have a size range stamped on it, it denotes the OD diameter of pipe, not the bore it fits on to.
(with the right tool they are reusable)
... All you had to do was ask and come round and get the tool.

  15. Stein Dinse will use the original part number and if it has a suffix letter, in your case Z, it means that it's a pattern part, or one made to their own specification.
i.e. our own part but equivalent to part number... x

You'll see it a lot on parts which you can't get anymore through the main dealer channel, for example on the older bikes like 900ss and 851/888

  16. Secondary failsafe. Provides earthing for the tank as all the electrical components therin are isolated due to o-rings and stuff. I probably doesn't need it in truth and maybe a throwback to 851 days and before when things liked getting their smoke on.

  17. Lots of really helpful stuff guys - thank you. I’d have had the cheek to come and ask for a loan of the tool @Sev but a wee ‘jaunt’ from Scotland to (presumably somewhere in England) - I’m cheaper buying one I suspect. Although, I do still have a lot of tools lying in a room full of stuff from my Dads business (he has since passed) and I tend to always have the tool needed. I just have to Google and keep looking :)

ok. I suspect the rusted out tank I had to replace, is the main cause of this. Might even just need a new filter and, bingo! Have ordered a couple of relays, but that was clicking fine. I don’t have the luxury of having two 749’s ;) but hopefully I will get there. If I have to buy a complete new pump, then like an idiot I probably will. Nostalgic stupidity.

Will be after my wee bike trip to Ireland, and @RC1 will probably have beaten me to it - and I will have my fingers, legs and eyes crossed for you.
    Thanks for all the help.

I need to find a thread about the Meta37T alarm. Wish I’d never had that installed :)

  18. Thanks, you know you helped me enough with the spade connector and crimping!
