Diagnostic Tools For Ducati. Which Would You Recommend?

  1. Thanks I just want something for the oil and service lights etc and obviously if there’s a problem can I ask where you got it please and how much thx

  2. I believe that JPDIAG can be used for the 1260 these days, you'll need to make sure before committing to that. You'll need appropriate leads and a laptop plus the licence which I understand is free but you still need to apply for it.

Alternatively the Ducati specific iScan OBDStar from BMDiag will do all of that and much more (diagnostics, usually with specific information if there's an issue) plus the ability to activate accessories like spot lights, heated grips etc. It's stand alone and effectively plugin and play. Not restricted by VIN to a specific bike but covers almost all modern Ducatis. It's an investment and will pay for itself in time. If you move on to another marquee selling it shouldn't be an issue either. Very glad I got mine, useful tool.

If you do change to another marque then it might be possible to replace the firmware with you chosen manufacturer, Rob at BMDiag should know the answer to that. The iScan will only cover one manufacturer at a time.

You can get them cheaper elsewhere. However, beware as these can be from the far east and duty and VAT might apply on top. Added to which you won't have the support of the UK importer.

  3. Thank you

  4. If you want cheap and just want to reset service lights and read error codes look at the TopDan scanner for Ducati.

  5. So long as you don't mind paying more to continue using it every 12 months. Their wording is somewhat ambiguous on this but some research on Amazon reviews shows that this is indeed the case. Whilst the OBDStar subscription does expire after 12 months the big difference is that it'll keep working, you just don't get updates with any new features or new models.

  6. Thx

  7. That’s interesting, so it switches off after 12 months? Or at least you have to pay for the app again on your mobile device?

I’ve not used it myself, just know of a couple who have acquired it due to its cheapness, but as we should all know by know, cheap is not always good.

    Thanks for the further info.

  8. Assuming that you mean the TopDon, rather than TopDan, Moto scanner (I couldn't find the latter) then here's that review on Amazon.

The unit looks capable but I would prefer the option to upgrade only if I needed to, or still have access to the usability that I've paid for going forward without having to pay an annual subscription.

  9. Looks like a good price, suspiciously too good to be true. However, reading the blurb, and extra pages of their site, it seems to be sent from a UK warehouse so no issues with customs/VAT charges. £60 less than BMDiag. Not sure about the level of support, should you need it, would be my only concern. The phone number has a +86 country code, this is China... Don't be fooled with the obdstar.co.uk domain name, I don't think this is the same company as obdstar.com who is the manufacturer.

It should come with one year of updates included, there after you'll need to pay if you want the latest updates. These are new models in the Ducati range that they add or any new features for your bike. As your bike has been out of production for a few years I doubt you'll be missing out. The Unit will continue to operate if you don't update it (unless they've changed something...).

  10. Hopefully you'll have ready everything - this is all I can see.

I'd assume that as you're buying the Ducati version you'd expect it to work on your Ducati out of the box with no subs, etc extras. I bought mine 2nd-hand so unfortunately can't be more helpful. I think @Bumpkin bought new, so can maybe clarify...

  11. Yes, bought new from BMDiag. 1st year included. Came pre installed with Ducati data out of the box. Needed updating, just a case of connecting to WiFi and going through the process in the menus. It's effectively a small Android tablet.
