Panigale 899. WARNING. Throttle sticking!

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Cerec1, Jan 12, 2014.

  1. Why did u change to 55 profile though out of interest? Does the 1199 in question also have any different profile to OE fitment?

  2. I wanted a tire with proper wet grip so fitted Michelin Pilot 3's. Only available in 55 profile rear.
Have spoken to Dunlop this week and have been told that their Sportsmart 2 is out in a 60 profile rear will be available in 5-6 weeks time. They are pretty good in the wet so that would be an alternative. Must say though they are in the same league for wet grip as the Michelins.

i think the the 1199 had a narrower rear but pretty sure the profile was std.

  3. Coincidently yes different profile tyres.

    Maybe something in it?

  4. Hi there.

Yes, mine ran 200/55 tyres and 190/55 tyres. It did this when on 190/55. Cerec1's did this on 180/55 not 180/60 tyres.

But as I am quite good at maths, I will simply ask the good people at Ducati to explain to me the formula governing this ECU intervention, and the relative impact on this calculation that changing one rolling circumference for the other makes in both instances.

As long as the result of this change alone is a sudden acceleration rather than engine braking result, then I will be convinced and say nothing more about it.

It isn't the tyres. If it were, then that clearly needs addressing too. I will find some answers and let you all know. In the meantime, I would only suggest that the gear position indicator jamming on "gear 1" is the red flag event.

  5. If the 1199 had a narrower rear then it's profile will have also changed, as a 200/55 isn't the same as a 190/55 (the profile is a ratio of the width). I can see why u wanted a more all weather tyre. I have super corsa's on my 848 and there no fun in the wet.

  6. If the Aprilia RSV4 can have an ECU that can learn which tire is fitted and adjust accordingly why can't Ducati?

  7. The question has been asked a lot!! I believe someone said on here that they are working on a software update to allow the TC to auto-calibrate.

  8. Joining the thread after seeing a post with a link on 899Panigale.org. I've had a similar problem on my 899, but can't say I noticed the throttle sticking.

The first time I was in Sport mode, 40 miles on the clock, on motorway when I got caught out in a heavy rain shower. I was doing around 70, changed up to top when I noticed the neutral light flash on, the engine warning light came and stayed on and the gear indicator showed 1, the EBC window showed -.

Fortunately I was close to home so slowed it down a little and got the bike home, by which time the gear indicator window was blank. This was over the Christmas period so the dealers were closed.

I did some checks on the internet and tried the ECU reset of turning on and off several times but this didn't seem to do anything. I had no neutral light and the bike couldn't start with the stand down.

I left it for a couple of days, then turned it on and everything seemed fine. I was wondering at first if damp had got in somewhere. A couple of days later the weather was good so I got out and put some more miles on the clock, after about 60 miles (in the dry) exactly the same happened so I headed home.

I got out the manual and got into the settings and it was showing Err - Gear. Was still a few days before the dealers re opened but as soon as they did I took the bike in, on the way the warning light was on, no neutral light and nothing in the gear indicator window.

Explained the fault and they took it in the workshop. Sods law, everything fine, no warning lights or fault codes!!!! Said it could be a faulty gear position sensor so have ordered a new one, this was almost three weeks ago now and I'm still waiting to hear from them that the part is in - not very impressed that I'm still waiting!

Only managed a short run since and seems fine, but it's happened twice so far!

  9. Hi
    Are you in the UK?

Out of interest what rear tire are you running?

My dealer managed to source and fit a new gear indicator in 2 days.

Your dealer ain't trying hard enough!

  10. Bridgestone T30's. have them. Aint knocked up too man miles yet but i really rate them.

  11. No matter what way you look at this issue, its scary, really. If it was a plane you bought it would be grounded.

  12. Yep, in Manchester, running the standard rear tyre, still under 200 miles on the clock. Will be chasing them up this week, been over two weeks now!

  13. Yet another manufacturer allowing their customers to carry out the final development on their product

Moral of this story, never hurry to buy the first off the line, wait at least 12 months for the gremlins to surface and for the bike to be "revised"

  14. Or in the case of MV Agusta, wait 12 Months until they have released 3 different special editions meanwhile none of the dealers can get hold of any to sell to people (the experience with dealer close to me, the next is 70+ miles away I believe!)

  15. I think the 1199 Panigale has been out long enough for it to be bug free. That has had a problem as well.

  16. Any news on this? Really interested in an 899 but not as a fault tester.

  17. No news from Ducati at all. My bike had a new gear indicator fitted and to date, albeit only 150 miles since, it's been fine.

I'm just keeping an eye on the said gear indicator. If it reads other than the gear the bike is in I'll assume the throttle will stay open again.

  18. Is it only happening to people that have changed to a more wet orientated tire?

  19. No, it's the failure of the gear position indicator that appears to be the issue.

  20. when MCT did my suspension, he would not ride it until he had turned the engine breaking control off! I did not know how to so he phoned someone that talked him through it.

I asked why he would not ride it with it on and did not really get an answer, he left me with the bike with it still switched off.
