Do you definitely have a FTDI based lead? You can distinguish between FTDI and Winchiphead as the latter will illuminate its LED as soon as you plug it in to the USB port. If it is Winchiphead then you need the correct driver CH341SER.EXE. Confirm the Com Port number for the lead using Device Manager. Enter the Com Port number in the box on the Software. You the need to select the 'Init' speed. For bikes using the IAW59M you use 'slow init' (bikes 2001 to 2004) for bikes using IAW5AM use 'fast init' (post 2004). For IAW59M you do not need a licence for the software to fully function. If your bike does not use the IAW5* family of ECU's then this software will not work for you. A 2003 749 would use the 'slow init' setting If anyone does find that they have the Winchiphead lead then you need to do a modifiation by making a solder bridge between pins 4 and 5. The picture below shows how
Thanks for the details. Lead doesn't illuminate when connected, but does when it has power from the bike. I've made sure that the com port matches that of the device manager. Is there a sequence for connecting? I did +ve (red) to the battery, then black to the frame for -ve. Then connected to the bike comm port. I heard that it shouldn't be connect to the -ve of the battery?
The -ve to a good earthing point is good practice and will prevent polarity inversion. Your lead is FTDI then. The ECU can time out on igntion so the way I connect is: Connect all leads, ensure correct com port set, ensure correct 'Init' speed set, click connect (should get green bar), and then switch ignition on.
Thanks for all that info, much appreciated. I've managed to get the driver to work and have done a successful cable test. Before I connect it to my bike I thought I would just check the ECU model. Its a 2003 999 so thought it must be a IAW59M ECU; how do you identify this? My ECU has the follwing stickers: 999DUCATI016 and 521DD029 on the other side.
That's an IAW59M so JPDiag will fully function for you without the need for a licence. Once you connect JPDiag to your bike it will display the ECU information. (The below is for an IAW5AM. The IAW59M will show Pas de No de Serie as it does not have a serial number) As a rule of thumb, IAW59M's were used 2001 to 2004 and IAW5AM used after 2004 (but an IAW5AM will work on a pre-2004 bike) Use the 'Slow Init' setting for the IAW59M Tip - Never, Ever connect the black flylead of the Fiat adaptor to the -ve terminal of the battery. Always connect it to a good earth on the frame or engine. Connect the red flylead to the +ve terminal of the battery. Observe this and you will never invert the flylead polarities and damage the ECU.
Hi Chris I'm having a problem connecting to a IAW59M with JPDiag . I wired the ecu to the KKL cable as you described for off bike connection in the old MMDiag forum . Triple checked the pinout and snag fit to the pins . In the past I reflashed a couple of 5AMs with the Writer , so there is nothing wrong with the KKL cable / driver or JP's software . The only response I get after clicking the "connect" button (slow init) , is the number 3F8F right next to it and the "connecting ..." message . I would greatly appreciate your help . Cheers Angelo
I'm assuming you have built the 'simple' connector. Apologies for the picture, but it should resemble this The pins you need to connect to are Pin 4 = +12v Pin 10 = -ve Pin 16 = K Line Pin 17 = +12v Pin 34 = -ve The side you connect to is where the heatsink screws are closest together Connection technique also plays a part. Do not connect +12v until you have pressed 'Connect' in the software. Then connect +12v. For IAW59M use 'slow init' and IAW5AM 'fast init' If this doesn't work PM me.

1. Did you install JPDiag correctly. Did you click on the computer icon on the second screen of the installation and then follow the prompts? 2. Have you set up the correct Com Port for the cable? Check in Device manager, the lead will show up under com ports. If the com port number is over 10 then change using advanced setting to a lower number. 3. With Win7 you need to navigate to the folder Program Files/JPDiag and locate the file jpdiag28c.exe (the one with the icon of an Italian flag). Right click on this file, select properties, select compatibility and then check XP Compat Mode and Admin Rights. Then click apply. 4. Put the correct com port number in the box on the start screen of JPDIag. For IAW5AM ECU's select Fast Init. For IAW59M ECU's select Slow Init. (IAW59M used up to 2004) 5. With the leads connected to the bike. The +ve fly lead to + on battery, the -ve fly lead to good earth on frame or engine. Click connect. You should see green bar below and change to 'Disconnect'. Now turn ignition of bike on.
What is the difference between slow and fast init as I can do both slow and fast on my 2007 695 ECU and 2002 620 one? Naoki I faced same problem as you, at the end connected the ECU to loom I had lying around, shorted the key barrel/kill switch, attached immo antenna and placed keyt next to it and connected it all to battery. No dash and all powered on.
JP found that the IAW59M's needed a slightly longer initiation time to connect. As you have found, sometimes the ECU's will connect on either.
HI chrisw No1~4-Ok No5 the -ve fly lead to good earth on frame(connected-vebattery) i can not speak ENGlish very well Advice Thank you so much. Naoki
Hi - Chrisw When I lead iaw reader in G uzzi, A fuel map reads, and do you write in it? Does the immobilizer number perform reading, too? I cannot be connected to Jp I'm sorry in childish English! Naoki, fromJapan.

My program works ok until i start the engine then it freezes i was just trying to do some trimming. Any ideas?
This is a known issue with some Computers. The solution is to put a USB hub between the USB lead and the computer. The hub does not need to be powered.
