Checking what? There's a mark on the alternator cover and one on the alternator........which you can see through the window......you check can check the timing roughly when you turn the engine over by hand...............if you get a spark somewhere near when the marks line up, then that shouldn't have moved. PS...........While you are doing all the testing, disconnect the pump and the fuel level sender........saves the battery a bit. For testing the resistance of the coils, pick-ups and the CDI boxes, there are plenty of examples explaining it better than I can if you do simple Google Searches like 'Testing a motorcycle coil...........' etc........but you need a test meter to do it. However, the single spark on each plug each time you turn the engine over suggests to me that you ain't wired up correctly............I reckon you should check the CDI boxes, pick-ups and coil wiring...easy to get them the wrong way round.
Where does the micro switch on the kick stand lead to? Is there any other safety devices that would stop the spark?
The kickstand switch only operates the 'stand down' warning light. The Off/Run/Off switch will stop the spark altogether, so you wouldn't even get one spark.
I will check that to, going over all the electrical connection before biteing the bullet and getting new coils and cdi units.
On reflection, I suppose the Off/Run/Off switch could be temperamental..........it has been known.....worth checking it out. I would be surprised if coils and CDI units have both failed.........you need to check the resistances....and those of the pick-ups...... A couple of long shots - Also check the big fuse by the side of the battery.....it supplies and protects the Reg/Rec, which may have a bearing on things... And check the second fuse down the fusebox, although if the petrol pump is running then it hasn't failed. Plus check the main relay up front and if you can try a different reg/rec.....if that has failed, it could well be affecting power to the coils...........at least that's what the wiring diagram seems to suggest. Do you know what type of Reg/Rec you have? Either Ducati or possibly an RR51?? I have attached a pic of my coil wiring in case it helps........A bit mucky, I know, but it was before I tidied it all up.
Has anyone got a set of coils that are working, that I could buy? Dont really want to buy new when i am not 100% sure it is them, but testing and messing around suggests that it is
