Upgraded my r/r on the 848 to a mosfet one too. Sorted it straight away. I think the link cable you need is from a triumph and was only a few quid. Put one on the 998 too.
I think I will go for the electrex option as its a direct bolt on replacement with a warranty and plugs in without requiring adaptors as per Robs link. I have been looking around and second hand breaker ones are not much cheaper, then you need the adaptor and new holes to secure it. I am half tempted to order one now but will wait and check nothing else obvious is amiss tonight first.
I looked at this mod, it was a yamaha reg/rec and a triumph loom. but then i found the Electrex plug and play which is easier and significantly cheaper too.
I had a trawl for second hand ones but they were coming up at £80 quid plus for the ones I thought would fit. I was worried about getting a duff one or ordering one that would not fit so took the plunge and bought the electrex one. I started the bike when I got home and the voltage was pretty consistent , 14.1 - 14.3 thereabouts. Anyway, I stripped it down between rain showers and have just finished. The one I have removed looks OE to me, fins on both sides, marked up SH579EA. Fingers crossed this is whats causing the flickering dash backlight and headlight but if I am honest I am not convinced. We will see I guess.
Oh and the bloody capscrew holding the battery box top on gave way and simply spun without undoing. Tried everything then ended up drilling it out with a 4mm drill bit. Think Robarano had a similar experience with his? Came out pretty clean with a 4mm drill. I will re fix the captive brass nut with something strong.
Morning pal. Too tired to read through this thread from the beginning... did you check the connector block? Ian
The reg I removed is a SH579ea. Is that original or an upgraded mosfet? Can't see a straight answer online. Which connector block Ian?
I recognised the all too familiar "click–click" on removing mine when I first got it, so slathered it up with copper slip in anticipation of trouble in the future. A first time owner removing fairing, confronted with the above, the only-just-long-enough tongue on the plastic battery clamp and the "water heated battery" could be forgiven for questioning the overall design level of the bike. Luckily, we all know better

Thanks bettes, Mine is ok, but needs a real good clean. Thanks ChrisW, the original one on it still then. Did Ducati not recall them all to change the regulator and add a heatshield? Mine has a heatshield fitted between the reg and the exhaust. I assumed they would have replaced the reg with a mosfet?
For my 916 I always soldered the two yellow wires. I kept finding resistance burn outs on the wiring. The connector always seemed to melt etc. Thus I solder them. I always carry a spare electrex RR51 under the seat of my 916 as it loves to eat RR and batteries. Also dont start the 916 whilst its still plugged into an optimate. That chews RR's too for me. I also had my stator rewound by west country windings with thicker yellow cable. Still eats RR's though, the bitch. Ive just put it down to one of her foibles.
