I had similar symptoms on my ST4S which has 996 motor, and I'm affraid it was the ECU. Hope I'm wrong but I bet that is your problem. Good luck....

The 20 Amp fuse for the head lamp circuit on my 2001 ST4S keeps blowing. The strange thing is when the headlamp is on the Rev counter stops...
