1000DS - anything to look out for?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JerryXt, Oct 24, 2013.

  1. My clocks failed progressively. I called Ducati and even though the bike was more than a couple of years out of warranty, they offered a goodwill 50% discount. New clocks now fitted. With very low mileage and most likely, a full dealer service history, as far as it goes, you should expect a polite hearing from them too.

The sidepanel issue is worth mastering before you really, really, have to on a deserted road in mid-Wales at night, with no phone signal, as I found out. The starter relays are good at not working whenever they feel like it and sometimes fail altogether**. As mmdog251 says, the headlight relay that you'll find on the inside of the front fairing by scraping your knuckles on and around the fork legs, below the top yoke, is a straight swap. My 'failed' relay went in place of the headlight one when I'd swapped them over and lo and behold, it still worked the headlight - ho hum...

Worth saving an ebay search for a DP 'comfort' seat, they do crop up every now and then and seem to have been made with a spongier concrete mix than the original. The handguards are worth getting too especially if you're going to ride over winter.

I discovered recently that to change a brake bulb - you need 2 different size Allen keys, neither of which are supplied in the tool kit. The tool kit is a great weakness containing little of any use, in fact, a couple of lolly sticks, some used cellotape and a boiled fish head would be just as useful! So after you've been round your bike checking stuff over, make a note of what you might need and add it to your onboard tool kit.

My bike came with a very useful centrestand and Termis. I decided to de-cat the bike, so bought the official DP pipe. The spitting rage and fury that ensued in the confines of the garage when I discovered you can't have the Ducati de-cat pipe with the Ducati centrestand and that I'd have to sacrifice the centrestand, was a shameful tableau I was glad no one was present to witness.

**I found details of much more reliable replacement relays on a US forum and bought a couple - they were shockingly inexpensive and have functioned faultlessly for 5 years. I'll try and find the details and post - unless someone else has the info and lobs it on before I dig it out.
