Got the tail unit flatted, polished, grilles stuck in and all fitted this evening, I'm happy with how that's turned out Then I had to take it off again because I'd forgotten to take off the masking tape holding the left hand grille in while the sikaflex got hold The clip on alignment tool I ordered arrived so I've got them lined up and the fasteners torqued to spec, Only thing I'm waiting on now are the fuel tank infill panels, Tyga reckon they're going to be here by the 26th so I think I might book an MOT this week so it's ready to go when they arrive.
Good news and bad news today... Good news is that it's now MOT'd with only an advisory for a noisy exhaust. Bad news is that an error code for 'fan, 18.2' popped up on the way home, on further inspection the left hand side fan was extremely stiff to turn, it turns out that there is enough 'adjustment' in the rad mounting to wedge the fan up against the throttle cable tubes where they mount to the bracket on the front of the airbox. This is now resolved and the fan turns freely but it had popped the 7.5a fuse for the fan and it looks like it's let the smoke out of the relay too, so the bike is now sat in the garage with the LHS fairing off, and to get to the relays I've had to drain the coolant to move the bottom hose and pull the main harness forward. I've fitted a new fuse, and ordered a pair of relays from RS components that hopefully I can collect tomorrow. Not bad if that's the only snagging from a full rebuild. Still no sign of the carbon side panels either
Thanks, Nothing fancy, a Clarke 50L compressor, ANI r160q midi spray gun in 1.2 for colour and clear, and a cheap ANI GF3 in 1.8 for primer. I use an in-line regulator and water trap on the bottom of the gun. Paint wise the red is 2k direct gloss from Nu-Agane, I think they've got a Kapci or Octoral system, everything else - HS clear, hardener, thinners is Upol system 25 stuff.
Managed to get a 60 mile shakedown run in yesterday with no issues to report other than feeling a bit (quite a bit) rusty after not riding for so long, bike behaved faultlessly though. I've swapped the Spider rearsets for some R&G ones, I just couldn't get on with the spider ones, too high and far forward for my long legs, annoyingly I can't send the spider ones back, so I'll need to sell them on. I've started collecting some more carbon bits looking ahead to this coming winter's maintenance period.. Both NOS genuine Ducati parts, I'm on the lookout for some quality carbon side fairings and belly pan too... Either OEM, fullsix, Ilmberger etc.. no China rubbish. Still no sign of the carbon fuel tank side panels from Tyga too.. very disappointing. I cancelled the order with reactive parts after "2-3 weeks" turned into nearly five, then Tyga's UK distributer had a set listed on eBay as 'last one' and a delivery date of a week or so, which implies they're in stock. Sadly this is a bait and switch, as when I contacted them a couple of days before the 'predicted' delivery date is got some BS message from them saying "we are currently waiting on a delivery of these you should have had a message stating this did you not get it ?" So why advertise them as 'last set' and a delivery date of a week if they're not in UK stock and need to be made in Thailand beware if you're thinking of ordering anything from 'jap4performance'
How did you find the Oberon slave cylinder on your test ride? I’ve been considering one, however there seems to be numerous complaints online that the larger cylinder bore does not release the clutch enough to engage neutral and in some cases not disengage enough for gear shifts, is there any truth to this?
Yes and no.. with my previous clutch (well worn) I had no issues, with the new one, with a stack height at the top end of the range it can be awkward to get into neutral when stationary with the engine running, but not impossible. I usually just make sure I'm in neutral as I'm rolling to a stop, I'm not aware of anyone having problems actually changing gear due to one, and haven't experienced that myself.
Managed to squeeze in a couple of rides over the weekend, bike is performing perfectly.. still no side panels from Tyga . Still feeling a bit rusty after not riding for almost a year, and don't think I've really got my confidence back after the crash.. I'm not sure what the future holds for me and the 1098 to be honest, I've been 'window shopping' MV Agusta F3 675 RC's online..
Mate, those waiting times are nothing and yes, loads of sellers stating in stock and it quite often is bollox! I ordered a pair of Ohlins FG 214 front forks for my Pani last week of December. After tonnes and tonnes of bullshit, they said the parcel with my forks was coming in last Friday. Even sent me the tracking number. Box turned up minus my forks with a note saying they’re going back into production in July. Missed out on a mega ride out cause of this! Bike looks good btw.
This & stories like it just seem to be the "norm" these days since covid & us leaving the EU. No matter what you want, you order it assuming it's in stock, wait & wait, email whoever it is to be told they are having difficulties with their supplier, days become weeks, weeks become months & months become years. Somewhere along that route, depending upon your level of tolerance, you bail out !!
On the plus side you can mention Brexit as a pejorative and no-one says fuck all defending it now. The evidence is clear, its a clusterfuck of epic proportions that most rational people foresaw. I cannot buy things from America nowadays. Not even a new Sato bar end weight after one of mine fell off. Brexit bastards.
Few pics post ride today, carbon side/ under tank panels fitted, I got bored of waiting for Tyga to come up with them so ended up buying some NOS genuine Ducati ones. I've not made my mind up fully but I think I'm going to draft a for sale ad for it, see if I can muster the patience for the 'best price for cash m8?' brigade
SHe looks fantastic, nicely done with your build. Seems a shame to sell her on and not enjoy the fruits of your labours..
Thanks, I've decided to keep it for now, I test rode a new s1000RR and it really wasn't for me, so I'm going to hang onto the 1098.. stay tuned for a few more upgrades over the winter
There's nothing particularly hard tbh, it's all just nuts and bolts. If you can build/buy a stand like the one I made then it will make it much easier for you. Then just be logical and methodical, split things down into individual systems i.e brakes, cooling system, controls, etc, buy a Dymo label maker and lots of thick ziploc bags to store parts in, and some big stackable plastic boxes to store the bagged and labeled parts in. Take lots of pics of everything from multiple angles as it comes apart, especially wiring routing. Expect it to grow arms and legs too.. once it's apart there's so many "while I'm in there" jobs that add up, like you might as well do the belts and valves while it's apart, replace fasteners for stainless/Ti or get them plated etc..
Got out for a ride yesterday, about 100 miles or so, and revisited the corner where I came off last year.. managed to keep it upright this time . I've booked a California superbike school (level 1) day at the end of the month too, but I've hired a zx10R for it as I'm sure the 1098 wouldn't pass noise, and it's just easier to drive there and back.
