The ugly issue of warranty claims rears its head if the bike is still under warranty and you have done the work yourself, but i do agree that a competent home mechanic who keeps a good record and receipts of what he has done would still be OK in my book. That said bikes built in the last 5 years or so have become more and more complex which makes me prefer a decent professional mechanic doing the work on a bike who has been trained properly.
Ok, if the bike is under warranty and you want to spend the money then yes get the dealer to do the work and stamp the book. I've just spent 3 hours changing my belts and still got to tension them but I've totally cleaned the area and spent more time cleaning all the other bits and know I need take the exhausts off to polish them. Would a dealer do that. But looking at your bike, it's very nice and yes it's a two way question, answer I'd get a dealer to do the work, but I would get some satisfaction from doing it myself. When I get to sell it on I would be confident of any issues and show the buyer. Just don't been scared of doing work yourself. Nice bike well.
My 999R has never been back to the dealer . I service myself that way I know its been done . No dabbing bits of paint here and there to check if they have been changed . And I get to put what oil I want in there not what the dealer says hes put in there.
I took off the belt cover today to at least visually inspect the belts. They seem to be fine but I noticed quite a bit of residue on one of the pulleys. It looks like a limescale or something similar. Should I be worried? Or just scrape it off and forget about it?
On the older bikes like 996 buy direct from Gates who manufacture the belts and supply Ducati. £42 for a pair of belts
Testastretta belts are one hundred pounds more than that! I believe all prices have now risen sharply since Audi took over. This is why I use ExactFit belts which are every bit as good as Gates/oem but way cheaper when you get them from @Exige on here. Changing oil, filters and belts is simple enough and it's really satisfying to do your own.
