1198s Fitting A Quick Shifter

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cupid Stunt, Sep 20, 2017.

  1. Erm no mate, they are bullet proof, never been a failure in history - as explained time and again in this thread...

  2. Is it the crudeness of the stock QS provided by Ducati that causes the problem then ?

  3. Mike has used HM for years. And has just destroyed his second 1*98 in 7 trackdays and 2 race weekends. He also destroyed several 748 boxes, but not to point of failure but point of wearing out so needed replacing. But he had the motor refreshed once a year...and new gearbox or cogs to go with it!

Having ridden my multi and 848 back to back with jap bikes, the distance between gears seems a lot more. With my gixer, it falls in seamlessly (as did my other one). And clutchless is easier too without a QS

  4. @Robarano has a Nova box I believe.
I have a HM QS on my 1098R but don't generally use it.

  5. Not sure why having a QS would make it harder to clutchless shift. It's still a rod from lever to gearbox.
And I would have thought clutchless shifting would damage the gearbox just the same a QS would. When clutchless shifting you roll the throttle off but it is only slightly so you are still putting similar stress on the gearbox.

  6. My 1098R came fitted with a NOVA gearbox by it's previous owner. He said 3rd became slightly notchy so forked out on the NOVA box and Nemesis TC / QS at the same time. Good for me, but I only rarely use the QS on full chat, at normal / quick road speeds, it's very smooth. :motorcycleduc:

I have a receipt from JHP for this work for, ahem...........£8,600  He was from Jersey, so there was no VAT on that either. :grinning:

    • WTF WTF x 1
  7. There’s a Ducati QS for 1*98 models? I thought they only started doing them from Panigale onwards.

  8. Holy Moly. I had better start saving for when mine goes bang then

  9. 2011 1198’s had it fitted as standard on base model along with traction control. Both werent really that great by todays standards.

  10. Yes, I’m thinking of going Japanese for next season because TC and gear change on mine are so crude.

  11. Seems to not be. Maybe because it’s lower Rev shift and the the throttle is closed more than a QS does. Could also be the setting on the QS isn’t right for the bike of course.

  12. 848 evo se corse had QS fitted standard, so did 848 streetfighter both released before the Panigale.

  13. I think it's more the case of the settings not being right. Been doing some reading up on the HM web site and it's a fairly involved process.

  14. Could be. It’s a shame tho, as thundering thru gears on a QS is awesome!

  15. Yeah the space between gears on a Ducati is ridiculous!

  16. The NOVA ratios are closer.

  17. May explain why cut time is so crucial and also why gearboxes fail.

  18. @Ash34 could be a cheap 1098r up for sale soon then??

  19. Yes I'd love one, particularly as I've a couple of open gearboxes on the table right now, if only they were a bit cheaper

  20. I think the gearbox itself was about £2.5k. Then you have all of the appropriate seals, bearings, fitting etc.

I'll post the picture of the 4 pages of receipts from JHP listing all the parts when I get a moment for a laugh. Like I say, I'm glad I have it, but more so that I didn't foot the bill for it. :)
