1199R Superleggera

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by JohnR, Oct 12, 2013.

  1. Hey Moly, I told my dealer a provisional yes, after initially telling him no. However, it's dependent on me seeing the specs etc., and he told me it was no problem as Ducati were happy not to see any wonga until 10 days after the order was placed. I'm now thinking no and going for a Desmo next year instead.

It's a bit cynical this, it won't be raced ? WTF ! I have a Panigale S Tricolore and half a Panigale R (I share it as a track day tool with my mate) and there's sod all difference between the two. I've blinged up the S with all the carbon bollocks and a full exhaust system. The R pulls a bit better in the lower rev range but the S catches it up in the higher revs. Interestingly, despite having the same tyres, pressures and set-up, the R weaves a little at high speed and the S tracks like an arrow. This is the bike they should have built instead of the R !

Maybe a Desmo next year.

  2. I'm going to be buried with my Bayliss 1098R. I love it, the attention to detail, the ride and the engine !

  3. I honestly don't see the point in it at all.

surely for those rich enough to buy a bike that is simply a 'look what we can do' excercise then why bother with that one, why not buy a stock panigale for £16k and then go to work on it with the change.

i mean the desmo is different, a glorious V4, Motogp derived, a true race bike. You can't make that from a different model as it doesn't exist.

But if you want a panigale that's high spec then why not just get one in to a specialist and get them to sort it out? It'll at least be different to the other 500 and could well end up better, cheaper and so on.

  4. I'm also having second thoughts, no doubt it will be very limited, however just been in the garage to see the Desmo....

  5. Flyer...get the Desmo & they'll be operating to remove the grin off your face mate! Yes, the 60 mile fuel range is shite, it goes through tyres for fun, you're terrified of dropping it but what a bike...nothing comes close to it! I have a number of bikes inc a fully kitted R7 but the Desmo is on a different level. The 1098R is similar in grunt but...the looks, the sound & the buzz knowing you're riding the closest thing there's been to a GP bike...priceless!!

  6. The 1098r is still my favourite bike, the Desmo would go before the r.

  7. I haven't been invited, but then again I dint have the money.

if I did it would be a desmo any day of the week. They are special. This 1199rr isn't. As dam says, throw some cash at a std one, or even an s and you'll achieve near enough the same result. You can't replicate a desmo, they're a one off!

  8. 4 foooks sake.... Checa has not been fit enough since Philip Island to really develop the bike and since Ducati changed its riders there has been a marked improvement in results..... a little bit more patience and it will be up there.

  9. glass half full then..........trouble is its full of pish.......

  10. flip man, how did you know I was on the Talisker tonight!

  11. I've had my D16 for a year and Moly is bang on. I've put my carbon fairings into the loft and replaced them with nicely painted fibreglass, I've bought some BST carbon wheels so I can run 17" rear and I have got a second-hand tank that I am having enlarged. The only other thing that needs sorting is the footpegs - way too low, too much flex and too expensive to replace in an off. Hopefully we have a solution coming for those as well.

With those problems fixed the D16 will be awesome - the only down side will be servicing costs once it is out of its 3-year warranty period. For the next two years though I aim to ride it as much as possible on road and track. I've done 5,000+ miles this year and plan more next year and the year after. Having said that I will need something as my main sportsbike once the D16 is out of warranty so I might just go for a Superleggera. I'll have to take a test ride on an S to see what I think and then wait to find out what the running costs are likely to be.

That's one option. The other is that I have first refusal on a rather special 916SPS. I had always planned to seriously bling-up my 996SPS at some point, but this could be a lot quicker and easier as it has serious amounts of unobtainium on it. Hmmmm.

  13. i know the feeling.. but monoblocs is RS stuff and that is/was yet another priceleague and probably lethal on a roadbike ...

i ve been toying with the SL idea all year to do in 2014... and now ducati made the hardest bits themselves... the frame will look swell ... :)

  16. When or if my Desmo ever lets go/gets crashed/fails (and at almost 18,000mls of road and track it hasn't yet :upyeah:) I will probably buy another one from someone who has wrapped theirs in cotton wool and got tired of polishing it.....to use as a donor bike! The experience is priceless.....

This on the other hand is distinctly underwhelming by comparison. I prefer Kope's by a mile! Desmo was also a bargain for what it is...... how this can be more expensive is beyond me. Desmo had unobtainium everything, and every machined part was unique to the Desmo so limited production run. This is just a very bling S/R. It's nice, but I am not going to bother.

If anyone has a track quality Desmo they want to sell me as a donor bike please let me know!

  17. Will it come with a free bag of kitty litter from a track of your choice?!

  18. So the Desmo is going to be cheaper than a superleggera? Whoah. My money would be with the Desmo (if i had it) everytime. The Desmo is a tool made from heaven and sprinkled in fairy dust. Had my kidneys been worth something, I'd happily PX one for a Desmo.
