  1. yes.... and happy with them....

  2. You notice any difference? Have heard wheels are lighter, but tyres heavier, so end up weighing about the same but still turn quicker and the larger sidewall gives lot more grip. Have you ridden the 17s and had chance to compare?

  3. Well i can't compare as i ve never ridden wit the 17" . the reason i carry them is that the guys ( one of whom is a Pirelli race tyre technician) all swear by them for the reasons you just mentionned... if i'm not mistaken, BSB will continue to carry them? or is that Germany?

  4. Bsb is moving to 17" I think.

  5. Ar right i was thinking of changing to 16.5 so i can get used slicks cheap ;-)

Not sure I would notice difference in grip tbh, although my track tool doesn't have fancy electrics just a ham fisted plonker on top

  6. Zolder in the new suit

frantically learning not to lean tooo much and slowly getting there... :) I did knock of 1 second of the best time... :)
happy with the way it all worked out...
more coming up from Hockenheim from yesterday.... top track and great weather...

  7. so here the movie from Hockenheim.... absolutely wonderful track with huge run offs and very complete roundabout... never boring as even the straight is bent... did a 2:00:06 and as tire was gone and the temp was cooling , did not want to push it ... Mugello is too close now... there are plenty of local riders who do a very good job and i was happy not to hold anybody up in fast group... plenty of beemers around and as Always it's up to the rider...
was most impressed with a streetfightered R1 tha just ran outside of everybody else and must have been 10 seconds faster... :)

    Winter plans

So now the SL is out and it’s quit a machine. Very hard to get to that level of performance for that budget. I know it sounds silly but for those who want to upgrade an R to the same level of performance ( weight + bhp) for that amount of investment, it will be quit a challenge to remain in the budget. its imossible imho.

Only people knee deep in the ducati circles ( prob professionals) have the acces to parts that will do the same and not having to shop in the DP parts catalog. And having to pay top mechanic dollars at dealer rates for every hour spent on the bike will be a horrendous bill.

I got lucky to find the most expensive parts on a ‘do you a favour’ basis and the fact that the guy building it, had just done his and so need not to learn his way around on the bike… on top he did much of it in his own time..
And the bike is fine. Very fine. But does this mean it cannot be approved?
Of course it can. the most irritating factor is the slow pick up below 6K which the Pro is known for. Above no problem but below quit a challenge.

And then there is setup that until Mugello has not been given the care it warrants. So it will over the winter and be integrated in the riding as off next year. Major issue seems to be that the bike tends to run wide wich will probably boil down to stiffening the rear spring, something I haven’t come around yet. We tried the F to P thing but before it stiffened up, the rear wallowed and put unrest in the front doing so. So this winter : 105 springrate coming up.. as to setup : I found JIhnny from Ducati Terneuzen willing to lend his knowledge to set the bike up properly. And to move around more easily, a higher seat is in the making. That should gain 2 cm in height and width allowing me to move more

The idea for next year is to do quit some analysis of the data. So I hope that replacing the DDA kit ( the current one has me riding the village most of the time) and extending it where possible should give the data needed.

Then on the power part. Much of the effect the SL carries can be had by doing a confined list of things it seems.
Go for the SBK ( runs right of the swingarm ) pipe. It seems now accepted that it’s THE pipe if you want 1198 torque form your engine. Some dyno-graphs do show that clearly. And then it should not be too much of a problem to install the TI exitvalves, a Pistal high comp 2 ring piston some other settings for the valves and have the camshaft sharpened and the crank balanced and lightened. All this should peak at 12K where it can be topped off. Will probably bring some more top end ( the magical 200 at the wheel? ) but most of all will give a powercurve that should get close to a 1198RS. Especially as there is now a SSTK ecu on the bike that allows to do a proper mapping.
Something decided this week is the change of radiator to make sure that all those horsies are not lost because the bike runs temps above 92°C some days have given 104’s which seems way too high..
We’re opting for a better core unit on top and bottom. The Febur with the Oil cooler will be for sale shortly.
That powercurve might bring back the 41 tooth sprocket giving more speed in the same gears.
Question : do I do this on the R engine or do I do it on a donor engine? Then the conrods will have to be added above the cost of the engine.. but then i can 'save' the R engine as doing it on the R will void all warranty.
I wonder how long it will take before the electronics in the SL will become available on the normal Panis. Wheelie control and ‘change DTC on the go’ sounds sexy enough.
And then there is weight. Where to loose it? The carbon subframe looks pretty enough. And so does the Mag frame – which will prob not be available as of next year. There are Mag triples available from Kamna. And ditching the ABS and baterry would bring another 2kg’s.. so if I could loose another 4-6 kg then that would bring the bike to around 160-162 kg wet. add 8 liters of fuel for a session and thats 170kg riding !
the only major bit - apart from the subframe - i found this week and is on it's way : the sideboards holding the electronics.. not only lighter bur def much prittier..

So it’s going to be an interesting winter.. le’ts see how the budget stacks up… and where it will take us.. i'll keep you informed! 

  13. ^^ Hey Kope - great pics and informative write up. I definitely need you to mail me details on rad - my bike runs too hot in Dubai - can try it on my R and then if it works swap it over to the superfanny!

  16. Raymond a question I'd like to know is this -

Would you have considered an 1199 SuperLeggera if you hadn't have done such a great job and chosen the 1199R route and the modifications that you've done/ doing?

On the other matter, I'd opt for a Donor Engine and keep the 1199R engine to 1 side.

  17. Samieb , i surely would . As i said before . It s ny on impossible to upgrade an r to that level for that budget .. If i can do it all this bike will be even better but with a load of effort and higher budget .. Keeping engine is good idea ... :)

  18. Beautiful bike Kope, congratulations. You've put so much work into it, you must be very proud.
