1199R trackbike project.

  1. Who care if it is? A non stock BMW is still a BMW...

  2. It was just a simple question.
I was just interested to know to what lengths you have to go to get a Panigale that is significantly better than an out-of-the-crate BMW.

The Ducati comes with added kudos, clearly.

  3. A pani base out of the crate can beat the beemer as well ... :)

  4. Got to say, Kope, great thread, with a story to show some true bounce back resilience.

wish I had (a) the time, (b) the money, and (c) the sheer single minded ness and determination to carry on building and re building despite the setbacks, crashes, etc.

the bikes look great (999 included - which I used to detest, but have grown a soft spot for, looks-wise).

keep up the good work and regular photos are a must (not so many of you with your various leathers, mind!)

  6. if this doesn't get a spread in PB i will be very disappointed in them. I would happily have a poster of this up in the garage. This is the epitome of bike modification.

  8. It's got to win the Ducati forum Bike of the year award that's for sure.

  9. There are other builds worthy of that title :)

  10. Oh yes, I forgot about Nick's bike.

OK, two bikes in the running.

  11. Development over this winter that should get a final go ahead soon is:

there are 3 major points of focus:

smoothing out the respons to throttle input.
    setup
    rider development

so the First point aims at achieving better pick up out of corners and better pull all over the range.
this should be brought by a u$optimizing the working of the engine and a better throttle to give better ( directer) respons.

this should be achieved by combining yet another exhaust ( RS-SBK) , a complete engine blueprint and an RS throttle-unit especially set up to play the torqcurve of the engine/pipe combo..

I'm happy to say that, when done, this elaborate job will be entrusted to Steve Moore and his BSB- Moto Rapido crew so it will be a fully UK based effort. :) the effort is aimed at creating a huge gain over the current one below 6.5K revs picking up as low as from 4.5.. at 7K tha gains should bring 8-12 horsies more and keep an advantage of 5bhp all over the line.. Knowing how conservative Steves dyno is, i'm sure that on ours, this should bring very close to 200BHP at the wheel.. this will also be the result of some very profound mapping and Quality time from Steve himself.. especially when the only 60° degrees twist to fully open ( 25° less then stock) gets matched to the power curve will make the combo stand out... really looking forward to that... :)

to keep the gained results from dwindling under use, a thicker cored radiator is ready to go on. The belly pan will be modified to allow hot air behind the lower radiator to get out better and quicker, allowing the radiator to work optimally. the radiator was cut and refit just to gain better fit..

so we should get much more power sooner and quicker to hit top power more often and smoother...

once this is done than we will no longer have to spend time on the power issues and we will be able to focus in the best off conditions on what should bring the most gain : rider development.

    what is needed here is

setup ( have to have faith in the bikes behaviour)
ergonomics ( it must allow me to function optimally on it)
tuition.. ( someone must show me where i'm wrong and how to improve - and no blabla but based on data)

so to setup : The basic setup and geometry will be entrusted to MCT from Terneuzen Holland who has done a great job taking the win in 3 classes in holland and has, just as Steve, now 2 full seasons experience under his belt..

The rear shock will be upgraded by installing heavier springs and a 100-110-120KG spring will all be tested thoughout the season.

To gather data and being not too impressed with the DDA from Ducati - especially compared to cost - a datalogging combo of AIM is on it's way to give all the DDA+ does plus suspension , leanangle and breakpressure data... all GPS data will be doubled up to make sure we get it all.... again this AIM kit is sourced from the UK... :)

so we should get two analysis suites to provide a lot of data... we agreed to build in systematic analysis between sessions. this should give us something to do between sessions and should also keep us focused on riding and performance... and let us work against a backdrop of data instead of gutfeeling... i m now convinced that poor setup contributed to the slide i took at SPA and it annoyes me quit a bit... but is guess you can't do it all in one year...

then to ergonomics... i ve ound that the new suit let me move around much better on the bike but that legroom is still too cramped which hinders endurance and makes me lazy in the later laps.. so a RACE SEAT that will be 2 cm higher and wider is to get in next week.. it should give me a better platform to hang off from, make me bend over better so keep my top lower. more legroom should make me move further from L to R... I sort of got inspired on this one seeing a 2m long durchman ride the Pani on a 15 cm high seat and coping well....

and then to perhaps the oddes kit added... i m growing on the idea to install the PRO SHIFT PS3 semi automatic closed loop gear changer. I know it can sound pritty sissy but i'm getting convinced that it will keep me from missing the gears i have been missing every session i've ridden... and especially on the upshift... i'm sure it's all my fault but apparantly is looks like i cannot tune it out of the bike and seeing the engine rev to 12.5 k just because i hit another false neutral cuses probably more hurting than me riding it all day... and with the shorter throttle it will not get better as it will be 100% open 6 times as much as it is now... also having more torque and pullnig harder under lean will reduce risk of upsetting the bike as i won't have to move on it in these conditions... the PS3 system is now so advanced it can be set to diffferent situations and conditions... and again : another UK/BRITTISH company ... :)

And as to tuition goes : it s up to Werner Damen - BMW factory IDM SBK champions team boss - and still SPA lap record holder - who has agreed to help get me over the obstacles that keep me from getting better... i hope i'll do him proud...

And should this all come to fruitition, it looks like i'll be doing my 4 30 minute stints at the 6H race at spa in august next year...
with Stef and Luc, this should make for a wonderfull 2014 !

in the mean time i picked up a dash at a good price as i can't stand the scratchings from the slide...

i'll post the pics as soon as the kit comes in.. :)

  12. You are a lucky man. Can't wait to hear about the results.

  13. You can get the Panigale superbike kit that plugs into the DDA+ and gives suspension and brake pressure I believe.

Oh and yes, great write up, I'm following it eagerly.

    Good luck

  14. cock on big dutch dude :upyeah:

  15. Hi Davey, you're right.. it does.. but as said i'm not impressed with the reliability of the gps data and the system will not give me lean if i m not mistaken... with going for the AIM, we'll have a second GPS tracker and all this for a really competitive price... :)

  17. I use Aim on my s1000, it's just the Aim soloDL coupled with a smartycam HD. Gives good results but I cannot comment on the shock potentiometers as I do not have any installed. This system doesn't give you lean angle. I get Yaw and Roll but tbh I'm not 100% sure what that is. I spoke to Aim regarding lean angle and they say it needs another "thingy", can't recall what it was but some sort of potentiometer that will measure lean I guess.
What Aim system are you thinking about ?
