1198 11mths In With An 1198

  1. I found the sergent to be very very comfy, it soaks up any vibrations and seems to add a few millimetres of height too.

However it isn’t very well countoured, it’s kind of flat, so I tend to use the standard seat mostly as I can move around on the bike easier.

Any long trips though and the Sargent goes on.

Yeah foot pegs are like greased eels, I need to get replacements but wasn’t sure on complete rear sets or just pegs.

  2. just pegs are good enough :upyeah:

  3. 1098R pegs are the same as the later panagale ones, just fitted a set to my 848...not cheap, but so much better and they look stock as well.....

  4. This is my third Ducati superbike, and couldn’t agree with you more. It is such a brutal machine, and i love it! One weak point how ever is the stock gearing so think about change that it it hasn’t been done already.. 14T to the front or a couple of t extra on the rear. (I my self i riding with 14T/38T and it gives a smoother ride at low speeds)

  5. A very interesting and informative write up - and the comments are also very interesting too.

I have just acquired an 1198S and I am now going through the angst of 'Is my 1198 a genuine bike or will I start to find evidence of previous issues and problems'?

So far so good, however, as both the engine and the handling would appear to be as expected with absolutely no issues or concerns noted, by myself, to date!

I have noted, (on my first day of ownership), that, (although she starts fine from cold), she was very reluctant to start when the engine is hot, (although I believe this particular issue is well 'documented' elsewhere?

Otherwise the performance and handling is excellent and I am very pleased with my new acquisition!

    But . . .

I removed the nearside fairing side panel today, (in order to fit an Optimate' charging lead), and everything appeared to be tidy and as I would expect on a bike with 12K on the clock but then I noticed what appeared to be a switch/sensor just resting against the coolant pipe below the battery!!

Alarm bells began to ring but, upon closer inspection, I noted that it was a rotary switch - possibly the side stand ignition inhibitor?

Sure enough - the original switch was still bolted to the side stand assembly - but its connector was not connected so I am presuming that it was faulty and kept causing the bike to stall by the previous owner!

I will be stripping the bodywork in order to give her a thorough check, (and clean), at my first opportunity just in case there are any other 'surprises' waiting for me!

Apologies for taking over your thread!

  6. Upgrade to your starter system cables will see the here resolved... Stu @Exige is the man you need to speak to about these. Have a set of the cables on my 1198 & Tricolore and they're the business :upyeah:

Subscribe to the forum and you'll get a discount in the cables and a Halfords trade card thrown in for good measure too!

  7. Empirically speaking, hot start issues tend to end in a new sprag clutch in a few thousand more miles.

Not a difficult job to do though.

  8. Been there, done that, got the bill! Might be easy to do but to have it done is not particularly cheap... Transforms starting though!

  9. You only get the Halfords card if you upgrade to the Halfords card ;)

  10. Ben many thanks for your comments on both counts - now where do i sign!

  11. I think the hot start issue can be bike dependent, I found that although mine had a new sprag and lithium battery, before the fuelling setup at jhp, it really was a nightmare.

At fuel stations I could be on the fourth or fifth burst on the starter before it would fire. At that point I’m worrying about flattening the battery and getting stranded.

After the setup, it started very reliably, 1st or 2nd stab on the starter when hot.

I added the exige cables last month and whilst I don’t think there is a difference on cold start, my engine definitely spins over a little more enthusiastically when hot, always now starting on the 1st starter stab when hot.

  12. Interesting write up, thank you!
