I’m still trying to work out why she had an Aussie cricket kit on. Aussie humour or have I missed something? Not even a terrible attempt at a caterpillar though. Tsk.
Her performance raised many many questions. I can’t decide whether she was knowingly shit, a la Eddie the Eagle, or if she genuinely thought she was smashing it. And what about the Australian Olympic Committee? The Aussies are notoriously and very self-consciously serious about sport, so I can’t imagine they’d allow someone to compete in their colours if they knew they were only doing it as a kind of joke.
According to the press conferences I’ve seen clips of they were pretty clear about who did the tests, how the tests were conducted, the lab is a known reputable lab. Biggest different from what I have read is IOC only look at testosterone and if your passports says female, you are in. Many governing bodies now are looking at XX/XY and determining eligibility on that. Other than ‘it’s run by Russians’ the IOC seem to have put no factual challenge out. And bear in mind neither boxer contested the results
Re XY thing, it’s awfully unfair for those who have been born with these genetic issue. But making it fair for them at the expense of fairness for the many isn’t acceptable imho. Life isn’t always fair: that’s life
Not just fairness, but safety. On average, male boxers’ punches are 162% more powerful than a female of the same weight.
Yes this is the crux of things, I don't believe society should allow one version of " fairness" to supercede "fairness" to another group, especially when severe physical harm can result.
Well, I watched some Tae Kwon Do, what a load of Shite! The fight I saw was just dancing on one leg and kicking the other competitor. I’m sorry, it’s not as good a Karate IMO I’ve been to Karate comps where the fighting has been pretty damn good. The Katas have been special too. Oh well.
As much as it pains me to admit it, I have to agree with you on that one… I watched the women final the other day, after the remark you made about Karate vs Tae Kwon Do. Hadn’t watched the sport in 3 decades, and I stand corrected in my previous comment above… It has completely changed in terms of physicality and intensity. What a deception! I practiced Tae Kwon Do as a kid/teenager. That was in the late 80’s - early 90’s, precisely when it entered the Olympics (1988 in Seoul). I was totally into it, including summer camps in South Korea, the whole nine yard. I remember the fighting part of it was extremely brutal and exhausting. Dangerous, even, the ultimate goal being to kick your opponent in the head as hard as possible for either a direct win (KO) or max points. I stopped when I was 19 as I wanted to join the AF to be a pilot and didn’t want to get an eye damaged… A quick look up on the web and you immediately find references about « old school » vs « modern » Tae Kwon Do. I wonder what happened? New rules? This is Tae Kwon Do fighting as I remember it: spectacular and scary!
Haha... It is a better sport to play than watch, but over the last couple of years the camera angles and coverage has improved dramatically. Plus the players are some of the fittest humans on the planet. Why squash should be in the Olympics!
Hmm ill take your word for it, not a fan of racket sports of any description tbh and the people who sit there watching a ball going backwards and forwards for three hours and more, always seem to be the ones to ask me how I can watch motorbikes “going round in circles” too lol.
