I was reading a lot of gumph about how to tell a mag wheel....pick one up, they are light, light, light
And that’s the reason I wanted some, the rest of the bike is all carbon fibre including the tank, so some nice light wheels to go with it would have been nice. I was watching some carbon wheels too, but they ended at a sniff over 2k. Little rich for my pockets
I know what your saying, carbon wheels are great in theory bud. They look amazing and are as light as a light thing. factor in pot holes, salt/stone damage from road use, curb stone (pavement mounting) not to mention the giro Agee to of the wheels acting on the bike changes....in short...great to look at on paper take them to the track.
Totally agree… I’m such an OCD nut so I really would pity the fool who did tyre changes for me if I had carbon wheels. Last bloke changed tyres only B-King genuinely thought they were brand new wheels he was fitting the tyres too, then I told him the bike was 11 years old and I expect them back unmarked as they were when I gave them to him. The sweat was dripping off him when he gave them back Don’t think he could stand the pressure of doing that again but on carbon wheels . Management is out at a wedding tonight and kids have a load of mates over for sleep over, so I’ve come down to my bar and having a drink while catching up on some motorsport. I’ve messaged her saying I’ve launched the sofa’s outside in the rain and the Ducati and GSXR are now in the bar. I’m not actually that brave but am awaiting her wrath imminently
I never added the ball and chain to my equation? Oz replacement wheels are a cool alternative to the Mach’ 5 spoke. if you want oem looks then you don’t have much choice unfortunately. The carbon wheels will work but you have to work them harder! (Go faster) to get the same affect as a heavier wheel. The best example I can give is, while entering a corner if you slow the rear end with the brake the rear end will step out of line and square off the corner. More notable if the rear drifts under breaking but the affect is the same for us mere mortals that use the rear upon corner entry, all be it at a more road going pace. the less weight you have in the wheels the harder the bike will be to control at lower speeds basically because you will have to work harder to balance yourself, but hard acceleration, high speed and hard breaking....you will have a blast
Post some pics of your bike bud, I like a carbon special! I’m Essex way if you ever are allowed out again and aren’t homeless, divorced, bankrupt! good luck!
@richard (smithy) Thanks for the info on the wheels, I’ve got my mind set on a set of Mag 5 spoke Marchi’s for now, so light enough to make a difference but not too much to change the riding characteristics too much. The bike handles impeccably right now with the Showa / Ohlins setup and it’s almost as if it’s been set up for my weight. I wouldn’t want to ruin things and the have to dial suspension in and adjust riding style to get the bike responding like I want it again. When I bought the bike a friend recognised it straight away. It belonged to the chap who owned Carbon Moto and I was his bike he used to develop carbon products for the 748/9** range. As such it’s covered in carbon which is excellent fit and really top draw stuff.
I learned this the hard way as well , put up a picture of a 748 I was interested in , asking a couple of questions to identify it, been on for weeks, then somebody bought it !
I spent many weeks and months looking for the wheels I have. I wanted 5 into 10 never used boxed 848 wheels and a few times I found them! While negotiations on a price was happening I posted (on another site) I had found what I wanted and not long after they were gone. It happens bud! I’m not on Facebook, I can’t stand reading about how many shits whoever has had in a week. Find what you want.......buy it......then post about how you found a bargain and how you fitted said part. have you considered 5 spoke standard wheels (period correct) but have them carbon dipped for effect without the expense. I say carbon dipped, it’s a water transfer with carbon affect.
There will be no hydro dipping so no panic , there is no ways I could perform such sacrilege on such a beautiful bike covered in proper carbon. I have use hydro dipping on car parts before and it has come a long way, last stuff I had done couldn’t really be easily differentiated from real carbon. That said, I want a nice set of Mag 5 spoke Marchi’s in either Senna Red or standard bronze/gold to match the frame.
the main fault with the lighter wheels is straight line stability, nothing to do with turn in speed. mag wheels went with the mag swinging arm precisely because of that issue
My aged memory on gyros would suggest a heavier wheel will have greater gyroscopic forces and thus more resistance to rapid /quick direction changed from forces acting on it thus less likely to deflect from road or rider/outside input. I would need to dig back 30 yrs to remember the mechanics of gyro precession ie the reaction (direction a rotating wheel/gyro turns) is I recall 90degrees to the vector on the axle of the wheel? and I CBA to check and a heavier wheel/gyro would be slower to react but equally slower to stop from so my guess is lighter wheels may make a bike feel more flighty to the rider and more sensitive to rider input subject to chassis geo and road surface being ridden blah blah etc.
I had magnesium Marchesini wheels on my 748 then swapped them onto my 916 Bitsa. Used them for 10 years plus, never had a problem with stability or cornering.
