Smells of self fix or aftermarket fairings if you really need to fix it and look good. If mot, just glue it and put a sticker over
Exactly what I would do to the crack Chris.....I would also drill 2mm diameter holes through the crack every 6mm say, and then with some tape stuck over the outside of the crack and holes, inject some Araldite into them from the rear.....I would also use a small piece of ally mesh on the rear side of the crack for additional reinforcement......Get in in place with a first application of Araldite, then stipple some more into the mesh until the mesh is covered. ....Araldite over-spread can be trimmed off with a blade while it is still 'plastic'. When the Araldite has gone right off, only thin layers of filler is needed to bring the surface back before spraying. AL
Thanks for the advice. I am happy to have a go at it myself and see how it comes out. I looked up a few videos on YouTube about repairing fairings, which were in line with what Chris suggested. When I get the bike next week I'll get a better idea of what needs to be done and post somemore pics (weather permitting as it's snowing here).
I found the followng repair kit on eBay....any thoughts? BROKEN CRACKED PLASTIC MOTORBIKE FAIRING REPAIR KIT | eBay
seen something similar used in motor trade for repairing car bumpers should be pretty good not a bad price if you put mesh behind panel drill some 3mm holes in fairing for repair compound to go through as a good key trim and sand as required done that before and worked well
# Wasting your money....do what Chris and I said.....(the link is only an expensive way of doing it) AL
Well it arrived today and I have to admit that I am pleasantly surprised. It needs a jolly good clean everywhere but starts and seems to run fine. The damage to the fairing seems to be manageable. Here are some pics: General View Right Side view Left Side view The tank seems to have had some sort of resin repair to the lower edge. Some views of the fairing damage. The bike also came with a load of paperwork, old MOT's, service invoices, manual, Warranty & Maintenance Booklet and the original sales documentation. Next job is to get my mechanic friend to look her over and start the job of cleaning her up (at least until the weather imrpoves).
So far, a bargain.........however, I don't like the look of the tank at the bottom rear either side.............If I were you I would investigate it throughly and carefully.......that looks like rust damage from the inside, so keep your eyes open for a good replacement tank. Looking at the fairing damage, almost certainly the bike has been dropped.....although not too heavily......have a good look at the rider footrest hangers and levers....they will usually tell you if it has gone over hard.......the hangers should be straight, not kinked. Fairing repairs should be fairly easy, but the big crack will need reinforcing otherwise it will open up again. The pimple low down is where the fairing brace off the engine tries to poke through the fairing.......when you repair it, make sure the rubber bung is on the end of the brace bar and at the same time I would Araldite a stainless steel disc (say, 75mm dia x 1.0mm thick) inside the fairing either side.....that should stop it poking through again (it's worked on mine). While you are cleaning, have a really close look all round the frame tubes where they join the headstock and up to about 75mm back along the tubes.....look for cracks. The beer can on the rear shock reservoir needs to be removed to see what it is covering up. Usually the finish on the reservoir suffers..... Arm yourself with plenty of rags, paraffin, brake cleaner and WD40........I don't need to tell you to keep the paraffin off the rubber stuff and the brakes, do I? Plus don't hit it with a pressure washer. AL
Thanks Aquebus for your comments, especially regarding the tank. I'll follow up with the seller as he mentioned about the tank having been relined or something to that effect by a previous owner. I have had a look at the rider footrest hangers and levers and I am not sure, there is no sign of the hangers being kinked. The previous owner advised me that the bike had not been dropped but rather had been banged into when stored in the shed. Therefore, it just have fallen against something to have damaged & cracked the fairing. Either way what's done is done and I'll set about trying to fix it as best I can. Cleaning wise I was not going to use a jet wash given the reputation that Italian electrics have, but rather use engine cleaner and brush etc. I'll probably remove the fairings completly to allow better access and facilitate repir. This will allow me to get some new fixings and perhaps when ready to go back on I can fit some crash protection bobbins.
If it isn't as described i.e. It's not a scratch then you can appeal against that on those grounds. I hope you won't need to however and it's everything you are looking for
Bah! Just seen page two, sorry! Glad you have it and are on your way to getting out there and riding soon
If Ghost sees the bit about the tank being relined, he will soon tell you what he thinks of the stuff......Still, if it has been lined, you will still have to be bl**dy careful about working on the outside of the tank....it looks to me as though it may have leaked, been filled, then possibly lined, and then some more filler........if you wipe your hands over the bad areas do they pick up petrol / smell? (The SSs always stink of petrol anyway....it's the breather on the top of the tank........BTW Make sure the breather pipe in the tank top is clear and the breather valve is on the right way round....Tiny arrow face away fom the tank, towards the clocks). AL
sadly tank is where your repair money probably ought to go first looking at picture (as said). It's often 'tip of the iceberg' when it's showing signs of erupting at the back like that (where they nearly all rot through first). Hope i'm wrong but if bad then a 'new' s/hand tank is probably the easiest route. You could ask on here or scan E-Bay. If not mint with a few dings a solid one can be had for around £50 but you ought to clap eyes on the inside of it first yourself before you part with money.
Checked the breather vale and that's on the right way round. There is no smell of petrol on the right hand side, but where the resin repair is on the left there is, plus a small amount of petrol sweating. Looks like that will need to be my first job.
Got a tank in my garage, been sat there years, if you want to collect you can have it. Bit of a distance from you tho
As Chris says, you can find reasonable secondhand ones for low money and if I were you I would considera trip to Hampshire for Bradder's one if he reckons it is OK. The most you really want to pay is about £350 because you can get a new ally one for that sort of price. AL
It was removed working, got pump fitted too, just been sat on a shelf since 2009. Happy to let it go to someone who will use it, not look to make money from it ;-)
bradders.....might be a good option. I am not sure how to PM you on this forum, but can you let me know how much you wold want for it? As regards collection, I could look into having it couriered.
