748 748 B/sp/sps/e/s/r: The Differences

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by pingping010101, Apr 20, 2014.

  1. - SP Con Rods - Steel, H section rods, allowing higher rev limits for racing, these rods are still considered up there with the best, made by Carillo, MUCH stronger than standard so allow sustained high revs.

    So witch one is better?

  2. I guess it depends on what you want to use them for? Ducati must have had a reason to change to titanium con rods and I would think that is due to less weight more than anything else.

  3. I have a 748 with a broken engine, i have the possibility to buy a Sp engine or a SPS engine... So i am searching for advice about witch one...

  4. The SPS has titanium con rod bolts and as they stretch they can only be used three times. The last time my 748R engine was rebuilt I was told they were about £200 per bolt, so £800 a set. You might want to bear that in mind if you need an engine rebuild at any point.

The SP was more commonly sold whereas the SPS was limited to only smaller numbers in the UK. I have one of the last SPS models to be sold in the UK and that was £12,250 in 1999.

  5. I read some where that the SP is the rarest model. So my intention is to have the best engine for the money.

    Thanks for the advice.

  6. I think you know the answer just from your own post.
479grams versus 328grams are the figures touted around btw.

  7. The SPS was made in lesser numbers and is therefore considered to be rarer, although it's possible that fewer SP's exist today as they are older. Only 20 were imported into the UK in 1999

  8. Many years ago the difference between the SP rods and SPS rods was discussed a lot. I believe the explanation was:-
The SPS rods were standard rods made from Titanium but it enabled race teams to use fancy Titanium rods similar to the ones found in the 916SP
For poorer mortals that raced it was better to use the SP rods as they were found to be far more durable than the standard SPS Titanium version

  9. Thank you!! I am also considering to rebuild the engine with 853cc upgrade....

  13. How much will you ask for it?

  14. Not really thought about price yet.
I would like to sell it as one complete job lot. Still got the original 748 engine, spare set of wheels etc.

PM me if you are genuinely interested and I send you a complete list of what is in the bike.

  16. Hi Ping Ping, just wanted to add to this section on the 748SPS...
The earlier bikes had 'DUCATI' on the fairing and nothing on the tank, but the later bikes had '748' on the fairing, and 'DUCATI' on the tank.
    Thanks for pulling this together.
