Quiet afternoon work wise so I decided to check the ECU for any water ingress, corrosion or dry joints and work my way along the loom to check all connectors for bad connections. ECU was absolutely spotless inside but I noticed that there's a JH Performance chip in there, quick call to them has confirmed that it's for open pipes, not the standard ones so I think I'll throw the Akras back on and see if it runs any better. Fingers crossed!! Failing that the plan will be to work through all of the other potential electrical issues.
Hopefully in the right location...looking at purchasing a 2000 748 BP; it has x2 keys (both black). I undertand Ducati didn't provide Red keys for the 748/916 range etc... but should there be a Code Card or the likes?? Or is just x2 black keys standard? TIA RR.
Don’t know if there should be a code card but if you’re worried about it you needn’t be. My bike came with a single key, and I got two made up for cheap just with a photo of the original.
No code card, immobiliser or anything else just 2 standard keys which fit ignition, fuel cap and seat lock.
This 748 is in sorry state....anyone have a RHS lower fairing in red for sale? I'm assuming the fairings seperate mid point, horizontally and the lower section replaced?
Loud pipes were not the answer. Went to go out for a run yesterday and as soon as I started riding I knew something was up, wouldn't pull at all, constantly stuttering and just running like shite. Opened the fuel cap in case there was an airlock and when I started up again I was greeted with a nice fountain of fuel spurting around the inside of the tank so it looks like the main fuel pipe has ruptured. I'm embarrassed that I didn't clock this when I had the pump out and replaced the filter over winter but at least I know what needs doing!
This may not be your problem because there is always unused fuel being returned back to the tank. Did you get the tps checked out? If excessive fuel is being squired into the tank it's possible that the fuel pressure regulator is faulty and not holding enough pressure in the lines to feed the injectors properly. Sorry to add to your list of possible causes.
Not managed to check the TPS yet but when I stuck a finger into the tank the spray felt like it was coming from the outlet pipe between the pump and the filter... Will check it all out before I commit to tank off.
It makes me cry at night the amount of good biking weather I've missed this season! TPS checked and the range was from 0.210V at closed throttle up to 4.78V at WOT. I didn't go through the full process of resetting it but to my mind it seems to be operating in the right range. Lazzzydog's suggestion might not be a million miles off, I found a thread on an American forum and the guy had exactly the same symptoms as me after fitting an incorrect FPR, so I guess mine could be on the way out and causing the issue. I'm fairly confident that it's not a split hose in the tank as when I looked at it again today the intermittent trickle / spray seems to be coming from the air separator. So next steps are coils, injectors and fuel pressure regulator, not necessarily in that order!
There will be more good days in the future mate! Good luck getting it sorted. If you need some help locally, give me a shout
December, symptoms were the same before and after. That also makes me rule out cracked hoses as they were all checked then and there's been no changes to the issue. I think I'm between faulty FPR or injector(s) at the moment, they'll be my next port of call.
I don't want to tempt fate but I finally think I've sorted it... I've been going through the wiring loom looking for bad contacts and on inspection of the connector for the atmospheric air pressure sensor I found it to be the colour of snooker chalk and roughly the same texture! The rubber boot on the wiring connector was absolutely shot so I bought some replacements and cleaned everything up. Test rode the bike yesterday, doing some riding in traffic and out on the open road, and it was absolutely faultless. Felt and sounded much smoother than I can ever remember, smelled less fuely and was far better behaved at steady throttle. Really hoping this is it sorted, the dodgy contact makes sense to me since the issue was intermittent and tended to rear it's head after the bike had been wet. I suppose in the absence of sensible air pressure readings the bike could randomly run well or badly depending on the actual air pressure. Chasing this issue has meant I've only managed about 450 miles on this bike in the past year! Finding any excuse to jump on the bike now to add miles and prove that it is in fact cured!
So far so good. Had been noticing a little bit of a stumble and the odd backfire now and then so have decided to tweak the mixture pot a little. Bike warmed up on the stand and the stumble was present just as you pick up of closed throttle lightly, fine if you grab a handful but less so if you're going for finesse! I found the pot set to exactly the middle of its travel as the base setting. Leaning it out seems to make it worse and the idle sounded noticeably less smooth, full rich smoothed out the idle and throttle response but absolutely stank so I've backed it off a bit from there, probably around halfway between full rich and the original set point. Sounds good, revs cleanly, just need a test ride now.
150 mile ride out today, Aberdeen - Huntly - Dufftown - The Lecht - Ballater - Aberdeen (via South Deeside). Bike was pretty much perfect, no stumble, no backfire and slow ridability greatly improved. Throttle response in the midrange was a little softer so I've leaned it out just a touch but overall a huge improvement over how it has been recently. So the bike was fine but f**k me I'm out of practice on a sportsbike. Ankles, knees, hips and wrists all pretty stiff after that run. I've done most of my riding on my big GS this year and it makes you forget how physical a sportsbike is on the twisty stuff. Loved it though. That being said, I've a hankering for an Aprilia RSV Mille R... talk me out of it!
Got a great run out on the bank holiday! But as per my last post I’m nowhere near bike fit. The bike hadn’t done many miles last year but been in the garage giving everything a once over, generally all good but have seen some really heavy wear on the tangs of the clutch pack. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this, give them a file and ride on or replace. Basket has wear but no sharp edges and the pack depth is 38mm which is bang on spec.
Most would throw their hands up in horror and scream replace everything. It looks very much the same condition as mine which while it rattles and bangs like hell it works just fine and doesn't slip at all. In short if it works as it should use it for now and plan for replacement in the future.
