The airbox is the same throughout the model years. It's is the standard one fitted to all the 748-9*6 models. It might have the old style airbox seal which is pretty poor, that has now been upgraded to a new thicker style. If it's perished it is best to replace it. I don't think you have a bad buy there at all, it's a pity you couldn't knock the seller down. The only down side is that he clearly didn't know or care what he had and probably had very little knowledge of that model, most people don't, you really need to own one and be able to compare it to a stock 748 to know how different they are. The cost was about £4,000 difference in the price between the two models when they were new and that was a lot of money in those days. It will always be rarer than an R but everyone seems to want them as absolutely stock as possible. My SPS is even "worse" as it is Red!!!! and I have done it the way I wanted it. But having said that, I have every original to put it back to totally stock If I ever needed to. I replaced everything that I changed with a substitute item.
Yes. I am guessing he bought it very cheap, didn't want to spend any money and wasn't interested really. I will also make this the way I want it, but I intend to collect all parts to be able to make it 100% standard if I want in the future. Good news about the airbox as I wanted a carbon one anyway and I'm assuming I will be able to pick up a stock box fairly cheaply then. Cool! Howabout the airtube thingys? Can I just pick up whatever set off ebay or are there different varieties? I don't like the stock plastic look really. And does anyone on here sell service stuff like belts etc, or I just get it from Ducati?
The airbox tubes are all the same right through the model range. If you buy carbon airtubes then there are several different types and it gets more complicated. The best are DP MS production ones, but they are rare and go for very silly money but they do take stock air filters. Most others are one piece and are divided into road and race. Race ones don't have indicator holes and may have a larger intake which requires a bigger fairing intake for them to fit. You then may get into a light hole problems etc. Stock carbon intakes to fit stock fairing intake holes will need some sort of in airbox filter. You can search out posts on here for that. Ducati do sell service kits and it may be cheaper to buy one complete kit. It includes I think, plugs, belts, air filters, fuel filter and washers for an oil change, there might be other things in the kit. I have only ever bought a partial kit off someone on eBay so cannot confirm everything that's in the kit. A dealer should know.
I have a 748sps but it is not one of the UK market ones I believe it started life in Germany. I believe that regardless of where it was destined when they left the factory they were all fitted with KPH speedos. The UK ones had the MPH speedo fitted here.Mine has a KPH speedo with a MPH dial fitted the trip meter is still in kilometres.Mine is still yellow but I have modified it to suit my tastes and stored all the parts removed. At the moment the engine is on the bench for a paint refresh and a new camshaft bearing. Its running a 916sp motor till I get the 748 sorted
It would take more than just changing the speedo. Any import would have the headlight dipping to the wrong side as well. Plus as I mentioned above the temp gauges are different for different markets. All 100 models were built as UK models from the start and were purely for the UK market. I believe a few were exported to Japan from new and they too would have MPH speedos. The UK models were not conversions. There are a few bogus SPS's about the same as there are bogus Foggy reps as well. These have been converted over here. A simple check with Ducati will tell you where the bike started life and what market it was intended for.
