I am not selling my bike this was just for information. As mentioned the R is dearer to maintain than an SP\SPS. I suspect the R cost less when it was new than say an SPS. Perhaps someone can confirm.
I would say that the 'R' especially those with full Ohlins are now well on there way to collector money, therefore the bulk of the increase in value has probably already been added. As always the answer is the 'best example' regardless of model IMHO, for example to me a ropey 'R' is less desirable than an immaculate 'S' but I would get an 'R' if I got one again (early is fine because you can re-valve the forks etc if there not to your liking and it has Ohlins rear I believe). You know 'Cambelts' are every 1 year on the 'R'? I assume?
Aah I see Am I right in thinking cambelts are some 120 quid? Seeing I will be doing any maintenance myself I guess the extra costs are more or less negligible? And what is the current value of these? I see R's advertised (in uk) from £5-6500 as we speak (not much out there), and an ebay auction for a mint -02 that stopped at £4000 (july) but didn't meet the reserve. Then there was the modified one that sold at 4500 (good value I guess if it floats your boat). Does anyone know of any good bikes that aren't advertised?
Dare I say it, but unless you must have the 916 looks, IMO a 749r is better bet, its a newer design and you get much more bike for your money, even the looks are growing on me.
I believe they are around £120 for belts but don't quote me, I was told that actually it wasn't a whole heap more work to change the belts as the dealer had to check them and the tension each year anyway. Value seems about right, but it's getting the right one! That's the challenge!..
See, to me that's not a good investment. U have to love that paint job. I think a good clean standard bike is the way to go. It's nice though
Don't ever buy a bike as an investment. There are far better ways to invest money. Also if you are doing the servicing yourself it will almost certainly have a detrimental effect on its overall value, which seems to be important to you. The R is a slightly higher spec than the SPS but both are bikes worth owning. Watch and enjoy.
Of course, you could just get a 916. More low-end stomp, less highly strung, same looks, maybe cheaper?
Don't listen to Carlos. He hasn't been let out for long. The 748 is better than the 749 regardless of whether that is true or not.
He may be a Ben Bostrom fan with blue wheels like that. I also favour the OEM shape screens. Double bubble look horrid on any bike. Practical yes. But yuk. IMO, which to be honest isn't worth much.
Oh for Christs sake don't buy one worrying about how much money you will or won't lose. Ride as many as you can, buy the one you enjoy the most. That's what they've for. Or am I missing the point of bikes?
Not to worry, definitely getting a 748/916 That's the main point yes, but my plan is it to build a small fleet of fun bikes and cars and I want to buy I wisely so I doesn't cost a lot of money if I need to get rid of stuff for whatever reason. So I'm trying to be sensible. (My wife wouldn't use that word... )
The more you pay for a bike, the more you potentially have to lose...simples. A decent £3k 748 doesn't have much value to lose.
