Dynotech in Tadley near Basingstoke are experienced in mapping the 749 with a seperate map for each cylinder. Mine was the first one they did but they have done many since. Really smooths it out. From memory it made about 110bhp and 60lbft torque in conjunction with the full 54mm titanium termi etc
Definitely get the suspension set up for your weight and riding style. Makes a huge difference. I'd also consider getting the forks serviced too.
Look. Buy one. Just try to get one with as much reputable dealer history as possible. Look out for the usuals when buying any bike. I had a 749s as my first duke. I listend to halfwit idiots over the years who turned me off them. Now, i reckon ive missed some of the best years of biking as i was a late-comer to the Ducati. Lifes to 'kin short, do it. Keep us posted on your purchase.
All ducati's are a pain in the arse for 90% of the time. The other 10% more than compensates for it though.
I find that my 999 is a pain in the neck at slow speeds, literally. My wrists are just fine but the effort of keeping my head up high enough to see forwards properly really hurts my neck unless I'm going fast enough to have the slipstream support my helmet. I always sit well forward to compensate. Anybody else get this???
Nope tbh - I'm a bit of a short arse at 5' 7'' and smallish statue, but find I fit the 749 quite comfortably. Slight back ache occasionally but no real pain on wrists, slipping clutch etc. Any discomfort is prob due to just time elapsing in a slightly unnatural position that any sport bike puts you in - and bear in mind I can't even sit up with left hand resting on leg etc due to no shoulder movement after me crash, so am always in tilted forward position. Basically great bike I reckon (there, that's done it - it'll prob break down now lol)!!
I didn't get this with my SS but I treated myself to a new helmet when I got the 999. I wonder if that's got something to do with it??
Received wisom, I think, is that the 916 is more 'arse-up' than the 999 but I have no direct experience of that.
Was just about to sat that. My 748 was head down arse up riding position. The 749 is "flat" in comparison. As mentioned by others, wrist etc is ok for me, occasionally I suffer with neck ache holding my head up to see clearly. But, this is more to do with my love of Simpson RX8 helmets, with a letter box slot for a visor opening.
My 916 is more arse up than my 1198. Its also a little less 'roomy'. Ive never ridden a **9 but they look as 'roomy' as the 1198 in comparison to the 916. The 1198 feels like a stretch to the bars.
749 is very slim bike and looks small, but is still a reasonable stretch to the bars. Still say get one!!
749 - 13t Front Sprocket ??? | Ducati Forum Heres a thread on 749 sprocket sizes Easy enough to change yourself provided you got a tool for changing the chain
I don't think anyone really needs a 13t fs. 14 is spot on with 15 occasionally. To change the front +\-1 you shouldn't need to break the chain or need any specialist tools. Simple job but a huge difference.
I've had my 749R for two years now and as my first sports bike it did take a bit of getting used to. Neck gets a bit sore keeping my head up but that's only a problem round the town and I find that I can ride with my hand on the throttle and my left hand on the fuel tank allows me to lift my head up a bit taking pressure off the neck. Basically the key is to move around a bit and it's not too bad once you get some speed on it - I could cruise all day at 80mph. My clutch was knackered when I got the bike - I can't believe how I managed to ride it - so put a new one on and it's like a different bike and not heavy at all. Keep on top of the maintenance - basically just service it regularly, either yourself or a decent shop and it should be fine. It's not that complicated really and you can get service manuals which guide you through most things.
I bought my black one new in 06 and have commuted on it ever since into London everyday. No trouble at all up until this year when I got the ecu failure business. Fantastic bike to ride though, handling is fantastic. Bought a 1098sf after it, which didn't handle half as well, much harder to turn it in. Even now I think the 749 looks ahead of its time, best looking bike on the road (hence why I made a half hearted effort to sell mine). Go for it, and post pix afterwards.
Ive had my 749s for quite a few years never had any big faults with it fuel pump relay is quite small on them & i've had to replace that. Im 6ft 1 so it can be hard to fit into it but you can adjust that foot pegs etc so no cramp your wrists will get sore going through traffic at low speeds but once you are above 30 mph you will be ok. Suspension wise well thats down to you don't over think it as your only riding on the roads , that said i did fettle with my bike a little on the rear to soften it. Just because of the roads here at home can be a bit bumpy at times. You will find that riding a Ducati it will draw a crowd wherever you go. Servicing not to bad biggest cost will be buying the cam belts. If you haven't bought one yet check them out they are a good bike with character & soul & its a Ducati. All that said come the new year i'm going to put mine up for sale thinking on going for another Ducati not sure what model though. If you haven't bought one yet check out mine its a Yellow monoposto 2004 749s Factory version ie thats the way it came from the factory not a made up one. Good luck.
