Get a 1098.......no TC, slipper, anti wheelie, anti stall, power modes, quick shifter..... Just you and that engine More is more
I had this debate a few months ago. I ended up getting the 1098 S as like Iceman said its come with all the trick bits. I think the 848 is a great bike until someone pull up next to you on the 1098 or 1198 then your feel like a little boy!!! The 1098 s is a great bike. PLUS there is some bargins out there ATM
Question for the track enthusiasts: Given that the 848 is enough for the road, is it also enough for the track? it seems that if the mental top end on the 1198 is going to frighten you, then surely giving it big stick down a straight and having to brake from 180 mph or whatever for the corner at the end of it is also going to wig you out. As will giving it stick out of the corners as it gets all out of shape. Or am I completely wrong? I can see that in the right hands, the 1198 should be faster. But how many of us have the right hands? I'd have thought that the 1198 would be a bit intimidating on the track, but I know nothing. I am from Barcelona.
And let's not forget that the 848 in the right hands will be a proper tool too  It's just that I haven't got the right hands :frown:
848 would be plenty track bike for most people, look at the 848 challenge series, nice to see people who CAN ride them exploiting their full potential. Having said that, 1098/1198 has so much torque, you could so the same lap times but only use second gear
848 a great track bike. As said, look at the challenge cup and the kind of times they are banging in, bit slower than the 600's but not by much
My mate currently has the 848 evo from ducati Manchester and I cannot help but think its a little smaller in stature although this is probably complete nonsense.
I had a drag race (on the bikes not in funny cloths) with a mate of mine who has an 1198 and funny thing is it seems there is not a lot in the speed difference maybe a bike or two up to top speed, down the twisty roads the 848 is awesome as it can carry sooo much corner speed but then there is no reason why the 1198 can't just ball size I guess, I prefer the 848 but then I don't do track days on it, if you want a reliable and fast track bike then maybe a S1000RR is a better option tbh I know lots of people who ride 1098 and 1198 on track and are much slower than MANY other brands and configs of bikes on the other hand I know riders on 848s and 250s that are faster than those with the big Ducatis, for me I would like to remain the faster guy on the smaller bike....lol
Its just more fun. Plain and simple. Sure it can be frustrating on long fast bits where the guy on the rocket clears off, but catching again in the corners is where its at
I own an 848 and test rode the evo version. The brakes are better but imo more to do with the larger discs than the monoblock calipers. I felt the evo revved quicker but had lost a little bottom end. The lightweight belt pulleys that help that quicker rev are available for not a lot to put on the standard 848. If you coming to an 848 for the first time i would go for an evo partly because it has a stronger bottom end on the motor but as an upgrade from an existing 848 i wouldn't swap unless i had reason too (age etc). The original has more than good enough brakes for 99% of applications and sometimes too strong can be your enemy. I did ride the 1098 before buying the 848. It is a serious power monster but somehow i just felt the 848 was more than enough for me and felt more engaging to ride. I quickly tire of outright speed to be honest, give me a nice twisty road and enough power to have fun and i'm happy enough.
Standard 848 and Evo are defo low on power over one thats slightly tuned with pipes etc, cans add a little more and a full system gives a whole new lease of life! Changed my cans for full 60mm system this year and she's a ripper! Will get my cams dialed in soon asI have time
I guess the main thing you have to consider if you can't choose between the first 848 and the evo is your budget personally I would just get the evo because its newer and I'm simple minded and want the latest toy and if your buying second hand make sure it's got termis because the difference in power delivery and throttle response is night and day
Arthur have u got any other mods to add power other than the system. I love my bike with the cans but I could be tempted to get the full system in the winter
