848 848 Rear Axle Retaining Nuts

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Bonkers the Dog, Sep 15, 2020.

  1. Well spotted that man; have a cigar. I shall have to reduce the efficacy of me piccies. However, I think that picture was taken before cinching everything up; it's still all loosey-goosey.

  2. Hello please help !!! My 848 wheel is stuck !!! I took the bike on trade before winter and rode 40 miles home and it felt great. Upon further investigation the thing was fucked all around. The sprocket nut was totally loose and only on the bike because of the clip. I put well over 2k into the bike over winter and i was just about to go out for a ride for the second attempt (first attempt almost caught on fire) and i had just remembered that nut!!! Go to shop next door and borrow socket and torque it down proper and get my gear on thinking im all set. Nope. Bike doesnt budge at all now and it is 100% from that nut. What the fuck do i do now

  3. Welcome. Why don’t you introduce yourself properly in the newbies forum and then ask your question in a new specific thread? That way your post won’t be “lost” and people can answer your questions directly :)

  4. My apologies, i was a bit upset earlier everything is shitty right now i was hoping for a little happiness with a ride but i got shut down hard. I was trying to research some but i was not finding anything with the sprocket nut being the thing to cause the wheel to lock except for this thread. Sorry to not introduce myself and all that but id like to be in and out of here, no offense.

As for the bike, im hoping i can just take it all apart and clean it (the bearing and surroundings) and re grease and make sure things go back on properly, one of previous owners replaced the rear wheel seemingly not long ago and i am just assuming and hoping they may have done the same thing with the spacer otherwise idk rn ... im tired ...

  5. Reading through above thread plus looking at the assembly of spacers below, hopefully you will work out what's missing/the wrong way round.:upyeah:

  6. Thank you. What are the odds i can just clean everything up and slap back together? Bike has 25.7k miles and not treated the best, does one usually replace anything in there? Like the whole hub? Just a couple bearings if need be? Do the spacers or anything wear out typically? Just trying to gauge what im getting into while i find a way to jack the bike up

  7. from what you have said, more than a clean is needed. If you look on the rest of the thread you will see that the O.P. had "flipped" the large conical washer. Check your order of assy as said, and see if it clamps up ok/wheel free to rotate. It's not safe to ride until you find this - don't be tempted to ride it with the nut half-torqued just because it stops it binding.

I'm sorry the pictures above went to large pixels - i only noticed today.
You can go on here and blow things up clearly (page 74-75):-

  8. Thank you for the assistance and booklet link. That is what i meant, a cleaning plus hoping its just the conical washer previous owner flipped like the OP of this thread. If its not that then i will be more out of luck than i thought. I will try figure it out in a bit here and update with my conclusion.

  10. Seems they were grinding against eachother but im not sure i understand, isnt the sloted thing on the hub supposed to spin with the hub and sprocket....how does tightening the sprocket nut lock the wheel??

I guess this isnt supposed to be sticking out after looking at other ones but is this not #12 in the manual you sent me? So i guess i have to take this apart and flip something around. Gonna have to find a massive allen now...

  12. so this is how you bought the bike, you haven't stripped it down before, that was the first time you took the rear sprocket off? When you said "all was running well"/words to that effect when you first got it, this just isn't possible looking at above, you really would've noticed this.. I will have a route around on YouTube in a minute to see if there is someone documenting all the rear hub components on a strip for your bike. you might have done the same already? Good chance there's something on there

  13. Exatcly, ive only rode the bike approximately 40 miles home from a meeting point where i traded one of my cars right before winter. I knew the bike needed some tlc, but as it turns out it needed damn near eveything lol...

  14. That is fucked... technically. It's missing part No. 12 the spacer... Chris is right I think you need to make a call and get your money back sharpish

  15. Depending on the description of the bike, and how long ago you bought it, i'd be tempted to take it up with them.

  16. LOL. That is my luck. Buddy this little bit here isnt anything, you are telling me im straight up missing the #12 spacer? LOL, Nice.
Idk if i mentioned this wheel lock up was my second attempt to go out for a ride. The first attempt ended after about 5 min of idling when the bike almost caught on fire from the fucked up wiring. (Regulator was bypassed and i didnt know anything about wiring until working on this thing lol) Had to get alternator and regulator and more oil and coolant.
Oh did i mention the spark plug behind the front wheel literally had the tip broken off lol. Idk how i made it home....also the front axle was not lined up correctly with the forks lol

  18. I think... honestly you're spending your cat's 9 lives... That lack of spacer could have welded the back wheel solid on a bend and you're lucky to be walking I think...

  19. Cant lie the bike ran great those 40 miles home lol i was hitting 130 in very high winds and the only other street bike ive had was an 03 636 and that thing was very sketchy at 130+ without much wind, this ducati was dangerously smooth. SUPRISINGLY.

Yeah man.....thats the way things are going nowadays it seems, so many people simply dont give a fuck about anyone else that they neglet maintenance of a vehicle to the point it is dangerous for not only the next owner but also the innocent surrounding traffic. This bike is not the first and certainly not the last example ive seen of this.
