Featured 851 - 1993 Strada Biposta (in Bits) Restoration

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by gaz92, Jul 25, 2024.

  1. I know this is not in the spirit of the project - but it really is just cheap, quick and easy to get stuff replated by people who do this stuff day in and day out. I guess if time and space is not an issue there is a good argument for doing it oneself though... soz. Kev. :-(

  6. Probably time is not an issue but space is so I would consider any recommendations for platers people have been happy with. Sheffield area but willing to travel.

Pulled the cams on Horz head and the opening rockers to inspect closers.

I think first photo ok. Second photo, not happy with one on left, one on right could be OK, 3rd and 4th pics closeups. Would appreciate thoughts.

  9. WAH900ss, Thanks for link. I am slowly picking up good used ones for about £35, but will keep then in mind.

  10. I had quite a few knackered ones that I'd collected over time, (none of them from my own motors!) I had sorted out/reclaimed by Newman Cams, it was a LOT CHEAPER when I had this done. They brazed Stellite pads to them then ground the correct radius, they now weigh a small fraction more but should be completely "Bullet Proof".
I intended to get the rest of my stash renovated but retirement and the rise in price has put a stop to that for now.
Shame as I've got spare BIG valve heads (Original genuine 916SP but now with 36/31mm valves) and 9*6 SPS cams to completely build up a spare set of Desmoquatro heads for my now 955cc (and possibly later 984cc) motor.
I currently running genuine 888/926 Corsa "G" heads fitted with 37/32mm valves in my 955cc 851 special, that's making 140 rwbhp at under 9,500rpm.

  11. Plus 1 for Newman cams. They rebuilt an inlet for a 30s Harley I had.

@gaz92 I’m the chap who introduced you to Phil. I hope you got a good one and it’s not too much to bring it back to life mate.

  12. Steve / Jimmy thanks for info on Newmans.
Jimmy, I think generally it's OK and I am quite happy with it. I think on my part I could have looked at it a bit closer at the bits but most things are not bad for its age. The heads and engine were built in good condition but I am bit disappointed with rocker condition and the splines on the drive shaft. So from something I was given the impression of it just needs bolting together I have some extra expenses and work to do. Don't mind the work not so the expense. But you live and learn and like I said should have looked at more in depth. So at the moment I need some rockers, a final drive shaft the sprocket is too loose on it as there is some indentation in the splines, and fork stanchions need replacing. Apart from a few bits of plastic that could have been better, it's not bad.

I was just hoping to get it together and running to test the ecu but that's not happening for a while.

Anyway long renovations are my specialty.

Will carry on posting when I have something of interest.

    Cheers Gaz

  14. No problem Jimmy, nothing ever is when bikes are involved. I saw the brigth lights of a 851 at an affordable price and went for it.

  15. I would have done the same in a heartbeat :D
I don't see many of these in my neck of the woods let alone projects like this, I suspect they are tightly held now so I may need to save for a complete one.

  17. Rubbish day so decided to take all the rockers our of heads and have a better look. A few showed a bit of scuffing but polished up ok.

Already replaced 1 closer and think this one needs doing. Picked a closer up for £30 but opener seem to be daft money £150, looks like this will have to be rechromed.

Hardest part is getting spring legs off and back under the repaining post.
Read various stuff on bent screwdrivers with slots in. I had some thickish tube which worked OK. Might knock something up a bit more stylish.

There seems to be (which makes sense) springs with straight legs and springs with bent legs. Straight legs put in first and goes up against the side wall of head, and bent springs in second which go to the side of the straight leg. But you probably already knew that.

    Cheers Gaz

  18. Looking at the output shaft I was not happy with the splines, there are some indentations which I did no see this as the sprocket was on. Also when I turned the sprocket I felt there was too much play.

So decided to split casings and replace.
One tool in the Arsenal I did not have was a primary gear puller. Ebay replicas at £150 where a bit much, but managed to find this on ebay.

It worked a treat. The plate was to stop the gear flying into threads, and I found some rubber to act as a cushion.

It wasn't as violent as the one on the 900ss, maybe because I but a bit of heat into it first and it took less force to get it off.

  19. Sorry for weird breathing noises, and any tips for splitting casings with 3 bond. Does heat soften it.
