Hi all, new to the forum having just sold my blade and now on the lookout for a 899 or 959, apart from the exhausts/ fairing/ slipper clutch and a few more cc is there much between them, I need to get my head around 959 exhaust if u go down that route, the akras look a bit better just wish was same as 899 then no brainier!! I owned an 899, and rode a 959 both on road and track, and the only thing worth having on the 959 over the 899 is the slipper clutch However, the exhaust looks pants in comparison to the 899, and you can buy a Sigma Slipper clutch kit for around £700, and it'll be a lot better than the one in the 959 Personally, I'd save a few £k and get yourself an 899 and buy a clutch kit
Just get a US 959/UK 1299 exhaust and lower panels..... http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/euro-4-exhaust-swap.43125/
This same conversation has recently played out in another thread. Worth a read if you have the same dilemma: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/come-on-then-899-vs-959-ergos-size.45592/
The above pic looks to be the best scenario from what I can see....you get the engine capacity and you loose the god awful pipes...or ET's solution which is just as elegant (always had a soft spot for Austin stuff)
The 959 is a little heavier I believe not just because of the exhausts, it's 7KG heavier but I think 3 is in the engine, so when considering the 'extra power' just consider that it's also geared longer and slightly heavier which might bring the differences slightly closer together. As with everything it's completely marginal! The 899 didn't become crap over night! Both need the rear shock rebuilt in my opinion to get any feel from the back end and many of us have. The warranty would be the driver for me, as much warranty as I could get and 899's will only have a year tops. Neither will disappoint you at the end of the day!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think it is 10kg heavier, but I have lost 5.5kg already by ditching the side exhaust/pegs. I have also put an extra tooth back on the rear sprocket which puts the gearing the same as the 899. As you say, it is all marginal. You'll get an 899 cheaper and you'll sell it cheaper too.... Really the only thing that makes any difference is what you can afford and what one you want. The rest is just silly details. For instance, I much prefer the rear seat section on the 1299/959, especially the pillion seat cover...
Buying the bike is the easy bit, it's what you do after that in terms of add on's. Stock 959 is a bloody fantastic bike, no doubts in my mind. I buy new, but I know it's a loss in the end, the used market needs people like me The warranty on such an expensive machine, gives me comfort. The prices for 899's imho are still quite high and used prices for 959's seem quite good. Unfortunately I can't see the SC Project when I'm on the bike, but it's fine, I can hear it.
Both are great bikes, but if you are after a good 899 then buy mine please, pampered and warranty until December , it has a stm slipper clutch and mag cases and oz wheels, I will be removing carbon and ohlins and exhaust but still a good looking bike, selling for £9800.
What year ? Mileage etc ? Will the wheels be staying? Could be interested Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you check in the for sale section all the spec is there it's way to much to list, I will bump it to the top,the bike is as per picture at the moment so price can be sorted to what you want left on the bike and the next service will be done by jhp when they remove the forks, so it will be ready to go for the next year.
I've seen simmy's bike in the flesh and its an gorgeous bike! With the gear on i would have that over an 959.
Shame this has to be accepted as normal in order to make the bike something palatable to the eye. Similar scenario to a conversation i was having with someone recently about the cost of Ducati's and bikes in general. The RRP is false really as straight away you 'have to' allow for the carbon and a new set of end cans.
I don't feel the need for carbon like I did on my 848. Now that they come with a rear hugger anyway, you don't buy a carbon one of those, and the bike looks perfect without carbon. You're right about the exhaust though!
It's a bit like buying a car. Get the car then you go down the extras list, by the time you're finished, your £20k car is now a £30k car. Maybe Ducato owners are more about image, so a bunch of possers
