899 899 Or 959?

  1. yep agree above after all most on her will never take it past 3k revs anyway more for polishing than using,

  2. Ride a 899 first, then ride the 959 and see if u can really feel the difference. The outcome that would make me buy the 959 would be whether I could feel a 20% improvement in most areas. For me these would be:

Ergonomics: is the new screen and fairing better in terms of comfort and protection.

Torque at low throttle opening: do I feel a much more measured and easy to ride engine character

Power: when I really get it revving, is it making the 899 feel lathargic.

Practical aspects: do I have more room, does the paint seem thicker (as the 899 had no clear coat).

Finally I would be looking to see if there was a deal that could be done on the 959 to make me go for it, often there is 'something' that can be done such as cheap service, 25% off accessories or pushing up the trade in on the old bike.

For what it's worth it's an awesome problem to have... Both will be amazing, I'm off to the garage again just to look at mine!

  3. There's a video on the new 959 thread that shows the 899 has more torque lower down.
As I said before.... I would need to feel a big difference between the two bikes for me to change. Even ohlins or a 1199 dash ect.
With regards to the fairings the 959 does provide better wind protection. However if wind protection is an issue with the 899 you can buy the fairing extensions on eBay and a higher screen.
Go get a test ride. See what you think. For me they are too similar and I prefer the 899 exhausts

  4. Good point there about the dash, Ducati could've upgraded to that as a sweetener for the people smuggler exhausts on the 959.
Coming from an 899 to a 1299 the dash is a welcome addition, it's got a "wow" factor to it.

  5. I've got a test ride next week, and as it's whilst my 899's in for a service, I'll be riding that there and back, so should be able to make a reasonable comparison for myself. The demo bike they have, I believe, has the Akra Twin pipe option exhausts

  6. Stating opinion once is fair enough but to keep banging on about it sounds like someone with nothing better to do.

I can't see why anyone would upgrade from an 899 to a 959 unless they wanted a newer bike but that's the way things are for the future. The new ZX10 gets a bit of stick for being quieter and heavier but Euro 4 will mean all bikes are the same.

  7. You could get a 899 still under warranty and save the cash you would have spent on a 959 on some nice upgrades. The 899 is a cracking bike and if the exhaust is an issue then it's a no-brainer really. Nice problem to have...

  8. I own neither but would go 959. I test rode the 899 and didn't buy one cos those pipes routed hot exhaust gases onto my leg. I finished the ride and wondered why Ducati could not use an exhaust that didn't roast me. So, while the 959 cans may not be pretty, I'm sure they won't cause the same issue. I await indignant mails from 899 users, but, hey, that's my view.

  9. The exhaust still routes under the seat, I don't expect heat will be any better/worse...

  10. Glad someone else has noticed all manufacturers are finding the same problem. Big cans and quieter engines.

  11. I imagine 899 owners will either keep their bikes until next yesr or just move brands, or just pay up and get the 1299.

  12. While your considering the 1299, you'd be better buying the 1299S. When does it stop, when the wallet is empty?

  13. Exactly this. The dealer told me that his arse actually gets hotter on the 959 demo bike as the new exhausts create an increased level of restriction in the exit of the hot gasses, so they actually create more heat in the upper section that runs under the seat.

  14. Do most of you just sit around warming your arse? :)

  15. How long before the 1299 gets the same exhaust or do think they will come up with an alternative?

  16. At the end of this year.

there were two issues why Ducati had to go with the 959 exhausts. One is the noise as the Euro 4 noise test is done from the side of the bike where the under belly exhausts exit and the other is that the cat takes up more room as it's bigger than before as it has to do more work. This meant there was no room for the silencing as well under the belly.

  17. What about MOT's will these bikes have to pass euro 4 tests?

  18. MOT doesn't currently test either noise or emissions.

  19. Good question and I have no idea. Reading only like most, its noise and emissions that resulted in pipes down the side. I can't imagine that Ducati developed the 959 engine then thought, shit we forgot about the pipes for the Euro. The Americans after all got the belly pipe, so it can be done.
I personally think the 1299 pipes will go down the side. Unfortunately, this will spell the end of the Pani.
Next year or later in the year might see a completely new bike. Theres a thought.

  20. What do you think?
