899 899s - Phase 2

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Joe P, Feb 11, 2016.

  1. Would be interested to know if the covers had a lot of heat insulation in them? And how the bike feels with them removed?

  2. I hate decals. I tried to put the tank stripes on.....and cocked it right up.....managed to get one stripe on reasonably ok....destroyed the rest in the process....

  3. Carbon and Kevlar tank covers...not sure about the white lettering which I put on though...

  4. No insulation whatsoever......l

  5. They look great! I nearly bought a set from the chap who sells them on the Ducati1299.com forum, but in the end thought the £200-ish price tag was a little steep. How much did you pay for yours and where'd you get them from?

Doesn't your white sticker go with the white on the tank/fairings? I'm sure they look fine :upyeah:

  6. £50 quid from QB carbon. They are a bit thin tbh I put some more Kevlar tape in the back before I stuck them on with plenty of silicone....

Yes the lettering is from the decal set for the tank that was sent with the fairings....so it all matches.

Gianluca the star is sending me some more stripes FOC. I did get one side reasonably ok and it really did finish off the great paint job but I decided it wasn't good enough so peeled it all off......

I'd like to really recommend Motoxpricambi. They do a really nicely painted set of ABS plastics and decals for the tank for £600 inc delivery. They are very good, almost too good for track fairings.....
And the lacquer is lovely and thick, I was able to polish out some really bad scrapes a treat!

  7. I knew some would take my comment personally but it wasn't meant that way but it is horses for courses i guess. I have test ridden the 899,1199 and a 1299 and without hesitation would have a 1299 over the others if I was going to spend another £4-5k on extras for an 899.
Its much more road-friendly than the 1199.

Still i am enjoying this thread and looking at the photo of all the lovely stuff Joe is fitting.

  8. It's cool

Your point is valid....we were just explaining why we chose 899s over 1299s...

  9. And btw I've spent way more than £4-5k.....

  10. The shock alone must have cost a fair bit. Have you been tempted to fit a single side swingarm?

  11. Forks, shock, and wheels were £5k alone....

No I don't think I will be tempted, but never say never.....

I think I'm about done on the 899 now - the plan is to get on and use it now for sunny track days, Poole Quay bike night, the odd ride out, and display it in my office every winter. I plan to hold on to it now.....

I've got another project in mind starting April when I have finished this Phase 2 build. Something way more ambitious....
Take a mid nineties Triumph 900 triple and install the forks, swing Arm, shock, wheels, brakes, handlebars, rearsets etc that are left over from the 899 build. And then do the stripped down cafe racer subframe seat and tank and exhaust thing..........Yep. Time to really test myself....

    This is inspiring me....

  12. The scary thing is you start with something like this...

    image.jpg

  13. I like it, just think the rear end is a little too sparse! Otherwise love the side swept headers and seamless megaphone type look, brill.

  14. Not done much on the bike for a few days. Having a new set of SuperCorsas fitted today and then I'll fit the new discs and put her all back together. Then I've just got to put the bodywork back on, redo the tank decals, give her a spring clean and jobs a good'un.

    Back in bits again....

    image.jpeg

Going to modify the bodywork so a) I can access the expansion tank cap and rad cap and b) see the oil level glass.

Went out for a longer ride over the weekend. Brakes continue to impress now they bedding in, and still no issue with ABS. Hoping the new discs will improve things even more. Did notice that the braking is so strong now it's almost fully compressing the forks! That combined with my Lardy arse which is the next thing to sort out!!
Almeria in 4 weeks so I better see if my leathers still fit!!

  15. Lovely bike Joe p,superb spec, what nm springs you running?with my lard ass they actually went down to 9.5 springs from 10,really interested in how the brakes go, have you activated the abs yet,I am thinking of bypassing the abs as the 899 challenge bikes brake leaver feel is supurb, can't say I have ever activated the abs even under very heavy braking.

  16. Thanks....yes I'm pleased with it......but I did worry I'd gone a bit OTT on the budget until I saw the various threads on SL modifications and now I'm feeling much more at one with myself....

11s on the front. I'm a big bloke...and I deffo need to be less so.....

Yes so far the m50 upgrade seems very worthwhile...I've never seen the ABS trigger on the road but I've felt it working on track loads.... I quite like the safety net of knowing its there....and I'm not good not enough to catch a front end slide on my knee....

One thing I have noticed with the M50s is that the pads have a narrower contact patch and therefore 3-4mm of the standard 899 disk isn't being used. I've got some 330mm discs, 1199 fitment to go on now....

I'll update further when they are fitted...

  17. Was thinking, if u ditch the lines to the pump, is there a electronic box (like with exhaust valves) u can plug in and take the pump off completely, must be worth a few kilo's?

Because if u just loop the brake line back on the pump it has no pressure relief.

  18. From what I have read everyone keeps the abs pump, i am sure it throws up a flat on the dash if you take it off, the lack of initial fell seems to be from the abs unit, my multi is the same the leaver comes back to the bars on first pull, really want to keep the abs but worried about why they say you can't use the m50 callipers with the 899 abs unit, quite fancy a set of them nickel brembos.

  19. Yep, agree. I'm on my 2nd ABS bike and I really dislike the brakes. Give me the 848 evo' brakes any day! That said I did think the 1199 ones were 'Less annoying'
