8k Miles In A Year. Doable?

Discussion in 'D16 Desmosedici RR' started by Dave, Apr 26, 2015.

  1. Its a bit f&ckin weird I must admit ... but of course I'm really enjoying it ... riding a bike when I would previously have driven for work is a lot more fun. Rolling up at my hotel for the evenng just wouldn't have had the same effect on the golfers if I wasn't on the bike ;-)

  2. Do some doughnuts on the 18th green if you really want to see what effect the Des can have on them.

  3. Dave is just finding more ways to justify using it, thats all ;)

  4. As long as the objective remains fun, and doesn't become a chore, then it will be entertaining.

As an aside, I am sure I've stayed at that hotel when doing stuff at Warwick Business school-does the hotel drive go right through the middle of the course for about 1/4 of a mile? Struggling to remember the name-the course looks familiar though-especially the lake....

  5. May be better not to describe in detail where Dave is with his 40k bike, eh ;)

  6. To any bike thieves out there, the bike's not really here at all ... I Photoshopped the picture ... And it's not really worth that much money and if it was here it would be parked right outside my bedroom patio doors with a piece of string tied to it and my big toe!

  7. Attach it to your tadger. That way if its nicked, you at least get a yank or two ;)

  8. Whose to say its today, this week or this year, or not an older pic? And I was more describing the entry to the golf course.
Fair point though, did the pic have its data deleted as well?

    :upyeah:

  9. First time I`ve ever known someone wanting to increase mileage in order to save money. Strange world. However, get yourself down here to the Pyrenees Dave and come riding with our Ducati group. Great roads, weather and scenery, and think of all the money you will be saving.;)

  10. This may be silly question but could your licence handle such regular use / abuse of your Desmo? I don't imagine you cruising at 59mph on the glorious West Country roads to be honest!

  11. That thought had crossed my mind. Double my normal annual mileage must mean double the risk! After a ban for speeding four years ago and my most recent Speed Awareness course year before last I am currently clean on my license so a few points won't be the end of the world if I get careless. I know where to be extra careful locally, but I need to have my wits about me when travelling somewhere new!

  12. I used my 1198 for travelling between Shropshire and South Cumbria yesterday. I wouldn't dare to do it too often - as you say, it's all about pushing your luck...

  13. Dont see how its really that much riskier than driving a car 40k miles a year

  14. I'm up to 9k :)

  15. I prefer riding in front of you than behind you. That is one loud motorbike - can't even hear mine when I'm behind - which isn't usually a problem!

  18. only just started racking up the miles (legally) yesterday gonna give it a damn good go.

  19. How's this going?

  20. Thanks for asking :)

My trip to the Black Forest with @Pete1950 et al and my 10 days at the TT gave me 2,000 miles and with a few other ride outs I'm currently up to 10,800 miles. I've had a few setbacks but I'm still on-track for 15K by October which is when my free servicing period finishes. I had a 300 mile run down to Lands End cancelled because of the weather, and I was planning to spend this weekend in Scotland which would have put another 1,500 on the clock but the weather is looking seriously shit. I'm in Manchester at the moment so plan B is to head down to sunny Pembrokeshire tomorrow to meet my wife and kids for the weekend. By the time I get home that will be about 1,200 miles this week so not so bad. Next week I'm working in Crawley so a ride there and back will give me another 400.

I put together a graph to help me plan and track it and this is how the it looks with me actually doing Pembrokeshire instead of the planned Scotland trip.

In August I'm off on holiday in Greece for a fortnight (hmmm - Euros or Drachma?!) so no riding then, but I have trip to the Nurburgring planned for Sept which should give me over 1,000 more ... so I just need to do an average of 350 miles per week for the remaining 5 weeks between times. By then I'll be so close that I reckon I'll be well motivated to just get out and do the miles no matter what the weather is. Touch wood!
