900ss 2002 What Do I Need To Know? Quick Pointers Please...

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by mileypau, Feb 4, 2015.

  1. Thanks Dave - not quite up to speed on all the model specs so I will browse the forum a bit more before a look see. Cheers.

  2. I can tell you a lot about the carbed SS's and the model range / specs as can many on this forum.........As for the IE, well, not much other than it's a bit like the carbed ones but different.

I have had a number of Kawasakis.......great engines in general........

H1 500 triple: basically a well stretched rubber band......until it was let go......went like hell but handled like shite.
Z400 twin: Engine OK but shite at everything else.
750 LTD: Poseurs bike, tough reliable engine; for a custom bike it handled fairly well.
1000RX: Extremely powerful, ridiculously high CoG; had to climb all over the tank to get it round corners and even then it was crap at keeping a line.
GPZ 600: Borrowed one for three months; reliable, handled well, but overall pretty boring.
ZXR 750 H1: Quick and reliable; hopeless lock to lock; seat bloody painful; didn't handle round Snetterto as I had expected it to....the ZZ1100 was better round there.
ZX10: Tough engine, a bit heavy and high-ish CoG, but reliable.(Used the engines in our outfits)
750 Zephyr: Retro bike; engine OK.....everything else, crap.
ZZR1100 x 2: Both the earliest version; low CoG; stable at high and low speeds, handled really well, went like shit off a shovel....Tough engines (used them in our outfits).

The only Kawasaki engine I ever saw fail was a GPZ600 in an F2 outfit........Con-rod broke and went through the side of the crankcase.

  3. Now then....only gone and bought another Duc'

Its a 2002 900 Sport ie in Matt Black...so Showa suspension. V tatty as it's been stored at the back of a builders shed for a couple of years. Trailered it back today. Only owes my £1k - yes indeed. Low mileage 9000 showing.

Won't get near it til next week and will service all fluids, have a look at the belts, needs a battery and then we'll crank it over.

Probably on a thread somewhere but is there a pdf of the manual knocking about.

Ta for the advice everyone - I will be reading forum posts avidly instead of working this week then spanners out. Lots of plans, but stage one is make it safe for TT trip with my son. Two Terreblanche designs in one garage.....

  4. right so 2 bikes .....WHERE ARE THE PICCYS :Wideyed:

  5. Certainly sir......

900s not even off the trailer yet....doesn't look so bad with a layer of frost. But every panel is scratched and indicator knocked off, cracking the fairing. General air of grubbiness and neglect. But seriously not bad for the price. Belts, filters, battery and fluids ordered.

Excited to get her up and running and then the project will start in earnest. First goal will just be a deep clean and see how she runs. That'll take us through to the TT. Then thoughts to start tweaking.

Other 999 pics are elsewhere on the forum, but here's a few snaps to start us off. Currently in carbon mode. The M2 is name of company I run with my son - carbon weave of the seat unit showing through to match the fairing. Also the stripe on the front mudguard the same.

  13. Good lad, Elise, now you are getting it.

To the OP, I would recommend that you check under the tank for the routing of leads. I was stranded on my very similar 750Sport ie with a worn ignition lead or some such. I'll never forget that hyena in a van, laughing at me as I pushed the bike home. Bastard
