900ss Fuel Tank - Surface Rust Inside

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by ck_uk, Jun 25, 2019.

  1. Spirits of Salts contains Hydrochloric Acid. Any idea of the concentration as the product data sheets I found don’t say?

  2. I have some Spirit of Salts, container says 32% concentration of Hydrochloric Acid (that's enough to eat through thin metal quite quickly).....neutralise with sodium bicarbonate.

The fumes will burn your nose; mouth; throat and lungs badly.

  3. Sorry, i did dilute with water

  4. I rang Granville the manufacturer of Petro putty, and a guy in the tech department said "it should last ten months no problem. Its not meant to be permanent" Hmmm doesn't sound so promising!

I've since rung around a few places and bike engineering types and they all reccomended Frost for repair stuff. Apparently the repair material must be designed to be ethanol proof. So I bought their "fix the pinholes from the outside" gloop. £22.

The two pics show the pinholes. I will let you all know if it works in a week or so.

I have a spare tank, so this is test to see whether it really works. If it does bonus!

  6. A member on this forum (IIRC) carried out several tank repairs very successfully for other members, by cutting rusted panels out and welding in new pieces of metal.

  7. There's an Indian company on Ebay, manufactures replica motorcycle tanks in steel and alloy. I mailed and asked if he did a tank for our SS bikes. He replied that if someone sent him one he would copy it and start selling them. Food for thought.

  8. How much does this fellow estimate the cost will be per tank? Got a link to him matey?

  9. I don't. I'd been browsing on Ebay at the time and saw that he did tanks for many different , mainly , British bikes and mailed him. That's when I got the reply from him. There are still lots of Indian sellers Ebay so probably a case of contacting them and asking.

  10. My tank had over 15 years of varnish and surface rust (fortunately no pin holes). White vinegar for a week did a remarkable job of cleanup.

  11. Hello.
I have used the products described below with success every time, they don't require any special handling/disposal methods, and they are supposed not to harm paintwork. Although, I wrapped my tank in a couple of layers of cling film just to be sure.
The instructions are straightforward and it has removed the rust every time, but does not protect the new surface, so a light coat of oil should protect it until you use it again.

    I hope it helps,

    Tom.

  12. I've used Phosphoric Acid a few times to clean surface rust from the inside of fuel tanks and general de-rusting it works well, its cheap simple & easy to use ( but always use gloves and glasses ) its also leave it chemical sealed
finish and does not turn it black like some of the other rust converters it just dissolves the rust and seals it
as mentioned above "Brick cleaner " will do the same as its Phosphoric Acid-based
Deeper rusting when de-rusted could leave pin holes and the tank will need sealing ( something I have never had to do, IMO pinholes means Id replace the tank if possible )
I would not use a rust converter and seal over it as the rust is still there but OK its sealed and been ok for others

From the pictures it looks crap but only seems to be surface rust , try brushing some on a test area and see how it goes I think you will be surprised , you can also see the surface and if there is any pitting
once your happy pour some inside and swill it around ( I used balloons to seal the filler and pump holes
