916 vs 848

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by funkyrimpler, Jun 7, 2013.

  1. And what does it matter if you can't use them (either on the road or track) or you ride like a pussy?

  2. thats a different thread.......seashells are for the termis or ackras thread, glitter thats for the 848R threads,,,,

  3. You can only say what the dyno says. I domt get this different day stuff, all dynos are calibrated to deliver a certain consistent result. Can understand 1 or 2 bhp out but not 15 or 20, ie 115 to 130 variance for an Evo

I've seen the yeanks have different numbers, isnt that the scale thye use is different?

If dynos could not be trusted, why wold they be used as a control method in racing? Funny how mine, on different dynos, have always need within a cple hp regalrdless of conditions

  4. my bike gets dynoed by SPR here in Nottingham every time i get her serviced, and she always reads more or less the same..when i had a faulty injector they used it to diagnose the fault and thats the only time she was down on power significantly...The bike runs a full Ferracci system with a JHP chip inside the P8 ECU....
Ive never had problems with flaking rockers (luckily), but Sam once remarked that someone had been 'having a bit of fun' with the engine as there were a few mods, not done by me incidentally...
I think my power output is fairly typical for the spec of the bike..great for a 916SP, but pathetic for just about any big bike made after 2000...
makes me happy though, and the old girl's still faster than i'll ever be.

  5. Dynos (driven directly from the engine/gearbox) are usually pretty accurate and comparable. Rolling roads where it's the wheels driving are oki-ish for crank HP (losses are worked out on the run down) but useless for comparing rear wheel HP between different bikes and different rolling roads. Tyres, tyre pressures, roller surface, how tightly it's strapped down and whether its a 1 or 2 roller setup have a massive effect.

While were talking about smells, my garage actually smells proper now I've swapped my modern bike for an old one .

  6. Must be time for a pic of an old 08 848, freshly washed and ready for a good blast while most are at work! :D

  7. Im not the only one to think that looks better than a 916 am I?

    *covers his head and runs*

  8. Nope. I agree with you. The 916 is a proper lard arse in comparison.

  9. yep lard arse...

  10. I don't know the answer to the debate on the power result, but I wouldn't use a US figure for any kind of comparison. Their petrol is something like 92 RON so it's not going to compare well with our basic 95, never mind 99 stuff. Ok, it's not 15bhp worth, but coupled with the scale maybe being different too it's not going to make comparisons easy with UK bikes on UK dynos. I thought UK places used the EEC Corrected scale (or something) which is supposed to be the lowest reading you can obtain from a dyno. Others use DIN and there are probably others too, I don't know much about this though. Have the US not got even more stringent emmissions regulations too? California certainly used to anyway.

Most bikes lose what, 10 to 15% from the claimed crank figure to the "real" rear wheel figure. So I guess you would expect a "140bhp" bike to be making 120-125bhp or so. As a wee benchmark, Suzuki claimed 140bhp for the model of GSXR 750 I had and most of those dyno'd at 125-130bhp at the wheel so you'd think the 848 is in that ballpark too. I'm thinking of getting mine dyno'd by a place near my work... but I'm not sure I want to have it thrashed in front of me by a dyno boy.

  11. 848 will probably be my next bike after the 749S when I can afford it.

Have had a 1098S which was stupidly fast but as I rarely did track days it would have ended in tears.....

  12. Do you think the 848 is slow? Think again.

  13. Oh no not slow, I have ridden one just different like the 748 v 916. The 1098 you could just turn the throttle but as was said above you need to rev the 848 a bit more just like the 748.....

Having said that I loved the 1199 I tried the other day and thought that was a better ride and less extreme than the 1098. No way could afford one of those though!

  14. If the 916 is so good, why's there what appears to be a 1098 lump in there?

  15. its a 748R actually..........with a (ahem) 998FO2 engine plus a bit...

    748 916 996 998

    848 1098 1198

    all the same but different...:upyeah:

some put bigger engines in, some do gold bar grips....

  16. Gold bar grips. What you think I am? Canadian?

apologies, at a glance they looked like 1098 pipes, heat shield threw me!

  17. yep 1098 pipes........70mm jobbie soon to be changed to a 998 carbon termi system....

  18. mate....pppeeerrrlllleeeeeeeseeee!!!!!

  19. Are you selling your old system?

  20. ill pm you.....
