916 916 Wont Idle After Strip And Clean

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by P1mao, Dec 23, 2022.

  1. Can’t see bugger all with a Camera, just squirt/spray when pump runs. Not sure how or where the return enters.

  2. WD40 down vert pot, in case some residue water found its way in...

  3. Not seen rain or water in 20yrs ;) been in a dry garage so not sure that’s the issue, but worth a look.
Fuel spray above filter when pump primed but unsure if that’s the return, starts in the button with the cold start but won’t idle. As soon as I flick it off it dies.

  4. Ah, when strip n clean I assumed washed too.

  5. I’m going to pop the standard cans back on, could be chasing my arse for nothing.

  6. Don’t believe all you read on FB about split pipes when one sees fuel spraying across inside the tank.

This is a perfectly normal and healthy 998 :upyeah:

  7. Brilliant
That’s just what I was looking for, I was hoping it was the return. Won’t pull the pump now to check, thanks.
I’m convinced it’s cans and wants setting up, this I can confirm by swapping back, or the tub of cleaner in 2 gallon of fuel, it starts on the button with the cold start. But then won’t on it’s own, I don’t think it’s much.

  8. FWIW my 748 ran for years with standard EPROM and open pipes. Never had a problem with idling or anything like that.

  9. Mmm
I will test the relevant sensors, buzz the wires through, maybe swap the pipes back, I could have a dodgy sensor or disturbed/damaged wire.

  10. Did you disturb the TPS?

Some years back, mine suddenly started running really bad at low revs and would just stop if I closed the throttle when stationary, wasn't particularly noticeable at big throttle openings.

Turns out one of the retaining screws had broken (or at least almost broken) so that it was not holding the TPS stable and it had moved just a small amount - enough to be reading around 170mv closed (set point is 150).

Don't know how long it had been broken as it looked like an old break/crack but it had been holding OK in that position until it didn't. Anyway once replaced and reset it was fine again.

  11. I havnt no,
But once in allowed back in the man cave after Christmas I will go over the connections/wiring, all looks perfect though to be fair but you never know.

  12. Agree - i fitted open Termi's to my 916 earlier this year, kept the standard EPROM Chip, and it runs like a peach.

  13. Something I have disturbed or sensor gone down, dodgy connection I’m sure.

  14. Only three sensors affect the idle from what I can make out tps/temp/air pressure.

  15. I ran my 916 with full 50 for about a yr before i got it dynoed.

  16. One thing that could stop it idling but working OK when there's some throttle is if you have a small air leak downstream of the throttle plates. The fuel will be metered for the TPS but extra air leans it out too far. The converse could also be true - not enough air at idle caused by throttles closed too far. As previous poster suggested maybe TPS has moved?

  17. Yes I will look at that, I take the idle is controlled by open throttle ?
Downstream you mean in the rubber boots (area) I had the throttle bodies off to clean and check. I take it the idle is controlled by open throttle then ?
Does it not have a separate idle circuit with the butterfly’s closed ?
    Thanks is all

  18. The idle is set by the throttle stop screw
Looking at the parts diagram there is no idle air solenoid or bypass circuit so it's all on the throttle stop

  20. Well !
You would never guess, started to strip to check and the fuel line connector wasn’t pushed fully home, but not leaking.
    Voila happy chappy
