I'd be tempted to get them zinc plated while they're out and looking ok, especially if you're planning on keeping them on show. There are plenty of platers who will do it for not much money or you can get a diy kit and use it on a hundred and one sundry bits like I do. If you're stuck for someone to do it I'm happy to do it for you for the cost of the postage. WW
Didn't Lucas loose a cylinder when a stone got flicked into an unguarded belt while in Poland a year or two ago?
Thanks weekend warrior, I put these photo's on a build thread and I mentioned in a comment that I was weary of the metal requiring protection after being 'electroly-fied', plating was something I was considering. I know a guy local to me that was doing it to ALL the parts he could on a car restoration and was going to see if he still had the kit, it had also crossed my mind to get involved with some DIY action!! Thanks very much for the offer, if it comes to it I'll take you up on that. Cheers. philodsmobile - I've been trying to find any examples of people having issues/incidents caused by cover-less belts and so far haven't heard of anyone directly having one so far so it's interesting to hear. Is it possible to confirm the exact incident? (E.g. Belt snapping because a stone got between the pulley and the belt?) Cheers.
Re the comment about leaving the covers off , I certainly would leave them on , if something did get in there between belt and pulley its seconds until disaster and expense , and also having seen someones hand that has been squashed into a 2mm gap it aint a pretty sight. Harleys use belts , but on the final drive , no where near as crtical a part as a cambelt. Just my 2p worth.
Just saw this Radical Ducati operating cover-less: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-npzsj56uO...ucati-Imola-Punto-Due-by-Radical-Ducati-1.jpg Looks damn good!
