They made a big thing about it to help promote the anniversario.... make of that what you will. Then, because they made such a big thing of it, enquiries went in to ask if it was available as an upgrade. Nothing more complicated or sinister than that. The 1299 has the Bosch inertial thingy jobby on it, so all works from that and the abs sensors with the simple software update.
