998 998 Matrix Production Numbers

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Cranker V2, May 19, 2014.

  1. I believe 996R's had 998 Engines (998cc) - shallow sump sand cast cases. i.e. the first use of the Testastretta engine in a production bike.

  2. What we need on here is someone with the true facts

  3. We like guessing though - it clouds the issue and makes the bikes more mysterious and valuable :)

  4. I was told my 999R Fila 2003 was the only bike to actually have 999cc, the 996R and 998R had 998cc.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  6. my 2002 998s has deep sump sandcast cases (as 996R)

its also has pankl titanium conrods as standard

  7. I ve just got a sand cast deep sump for mine I ve been trying to check from which bike it came from does any one have any idea of engine numbers I guess the first 500 were 996r but mines in the 1500s so I think it's a 998s

  8. Could i ask what you bagged one for ?
Fitting just as better than std ?

  9. Wazza and Pvw, got any photos you can put up, never seen one in the flesh.

  10. Got it from Feebay from a top bloke very helpful & honest it was delivered today (sorry no pic s yet as it's at my mates house my missus does not know about it she would kill me ) it should be a straight fit but the fairings look interesting as all other 998 with deep sump have belly pan so I think I have some more shopping to do before fitting it but a friend of mine thinks I am de- valuing it,by changing the engine to deep sump but to me it's improving it what do you think ?

  11. You are making it better while de valuing it - but they are not on the collectors radar really so enjoy! Changing the crank cases will show an engine change which is always a turn off for buyers but if you keep the original case than maybe not so much.

  12. its a better engine tho so as exige says keep the old one for when you sell it.

might be worth getting a get a new speedo at this point too

  13. I put 999 ohlins front forks on last year so changed to whole front end (4 pads , RS fully floating disks ) and he reckoned that that added value ? Must say she's a keeper not so worried about value but he's a bike dealer so I find it interesting
    Like the speedo idea thanks

  14. Will the exhaust fit?

  15. No need a deep sump one well so I ve read

  16. Did you buy just a sump or sand cast parts also as I'm confused ?
Why do you wish this,do you wheely a great deal as most Dukes run happily with std sumps ?

My Fila R if it helps had clam shell fairings a la 916 etc and the deeper sump came out of a hole at the bottom, not ideal but a possible thought vs new fairings

  17. Sorry to appear daft but why a new speedo ?
