998 Track Bike

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Fastline, Aug 25, 2013.

  1. Ok the alarm loom is now off the bike just checked she is very turn of and onable so all good there

Ive got the ignition switch off, had to loosen the airbox to get it out, pluged it in just to check all running ok before I tackle the mass of plug at the front behind the light, which i must say ducati make it much easyer than most the jap bikes i've worked on IMG_0105.jpg

  2. Yes, Diode is from the factory and is to sink any current from a back emf when the coil switched.

  3. Ducati used to sell a kit to uprate a 998 to 998S spec. it was mostly cams and a 50mm exhaust as I remember. I doubt that you would be able to buy a new kit now though.

  4. Got my carbon undertray it's wrong one , looks really nice but wrong, does everyone have these problems or just me.

Had a little more of a look at the bikes wiring last night and i've worked out what wires will allow the bike to start, ordered a multi plug that looks the same so hopefully be ably to have a switch that just plugs in, if its wrong i can uses a section of the alarm loom to do the same thing, not sure if i need to power any other circuits, will have to look and make sure all the gauges and warning lights work.

What effect would the 998S cams produce if I fitted those, i've got 50mm exhausts, much else need to changed to make em work

  5. I think stock they go from 125 bhp approx to 136 bhp. A good set up on a dyno could easily give you more. Contact Chris Steedman at CJS Ducati for a custom map, he can do your ECU no problem.

Look on here for examples of his work many will give positive testimony to his mapping skills. He did an ace job on my 748R engine fitted in a S frame and with different injectors etc.

  6. CJS sound like a bit of a trot away, But i'm not really after doing anything major engine tuning wise at he moment, although there is a little occasional missfire seems to come and go, I was thinking about taking bike to HM Racing once its all together get a suspension set up and maybe a power run on there dyno, see if anything shows up

But just out of curiosity whats possible mapping wise with the standard ecu i have, do i need an add on unit or can it be remapped

Oh when i say standard ecu i know it was changed when the exhaust system was fitted, i have original exhaust and ecu

  7. CJS can set up a full map with all the necessary parameters and far better than any Power Comander could ever do, they also they tend to unleash any hidden horsepower by getting the correct fueling at every stage. Check out some of the posts on here. Your original ECU can be re-mapped. It is money well spent.

On my 748R I got individual maps for both cylinders and also a rev limit set up as well to stop the bike overevving, basically this cuts out one cylinder and therefore doesn't give the harsh cutout a stock chip does. My 998 in particular cuts out viciously if you overrev it using the stock ECU.

  8. Here the philosophy for PC v CJS remap.

PC purchase and remap cost about the same as a CJS remap. CJS remap seems (on reported results) to get improved results over a PC remap. However, if you make changes to the set-up, cams, cam timing, airtubes, exhaust systems etc with the CJS route it needs to go back to CJS and be remapped (cost wise? same as original set-up?) With a PC set-up, its dyno time only cost. So if you do everything at once and don't plan to change owt, CJS looks good. And another but - with the PC mapping, you can always sell the PC and get a few quid back. Plus PC mapping is currently more readily available.

  9. Are CJS the only people that can remap the existing or are there other's out there

I can see me tinkering with this bike improving as time goes on but i really don't like PC units got a blade that had one only time the bike let me down was when the PC unit went wrong, no damage just took it off and bike was fine again, that was a few years ago mind you, hopefully quality better

  10. £250 ish for individual cylinder mapping plus PC

  11. Chris Steedman is a leading light in this area and he has a superior knowledge of Ducati's. He invested a lot of money into the set up that he now has, so he is certainly the one I would and did consider first when I had mine done. There are others but I doubt they have his breadth of knowledge.

He does post on the forum on the odd occasion so you can check out his posts and judge for yourself. He has put together some impressive bikes over the years.

  12. Been trying to find some Tygon 2075 or 2375 6mm I.D for the front master cylinder to reservoir any one any ideas[h=4][/h]

  13. Tyres have turned up today, got em in my office it smells like tyre shop now, they look good marked up as 12 lap oulton

Need to get tyre changing kit really want be able to do this myself, ive done loads of offroad tyres so think just a case of having nice manual tyre changer and roller bar

    Anyone here fit there own

  14. Yep, but on a tyre changing machine. :upyeah:

  15. the ignition switch is just strip the wiring back to the white block connector and all you then need is a toggle switch two wires and two spade connectors.....

  17. nice project

one thing, (if i missed it in you post sorry) if you putting aftermarket carbon airtubes on, what air filters are you planning on using? or have you got the DP tubes that take the OEM filters?

PCIII is quite a simple device really, all it does is piggback between the ecu and injectors while monitoring the rpm and throttle position. the ecu sends out pulses to the injectors that the PCIII either increases or decreases per rev based on an additional the map stored in the PCIII.
they used to be the only way to do it

I personally have found PCIII's to be quite unreliable (i have had a few on diff bikes) and thay can cause all sorts of misfiring, dropping cylinders and other oddities. more than once i have had to pull in and bypass the bloody thing

the advantage of a custom remap is that there are more things that can be adjusted on the OEM ECU (such as ignition, torque limiters) and at higher resolution than is possible on a PCIII. in the hands of a good tuner this can really make a difference

chris steedman CJS has done a lot of playing with the 998 (for customers and his own bikes) so he does really know his stuff with those engines. if you want to go the better cams, head porting, engine blueprinting etc, hes is probably one of the most knowledgable people in the UK ( available to us mere mortals with relatively modest amounts of cash). theres a case study on his site of a ported and tuned 998s putting out 155RWBHP!

if you just want a remap, BSD in Peterborough will do a very good job (for similar money to CJS), they do a lot of race bikes and are a a real no bullshit operation. they have done a great job on a one of mine and quite a few friends bikes. i will likely be going back there this winter.

i think you would realistically be looking for a about 6-8% more power, and slightly better mid range torque but with everything nice smooth and consistent all the way through the rev range

that said i'd be surprised if HM racing can't do remaps now too, the ECU adjusting technology for the Marelli 5AM/59M is quite widely available

if you cant be arsed i know a guy who spent a small fortune putting a 996 track bike together that has a 1098 lump in it then went and then bought a beemer s1100rr to go enduro racing so its languishing in his garage

if your interested send me a pm and i will a pass on yr deets

  18. I was thinking about the air filters last night, you are right this is something I still need to sort out, seems like theres quiet a few options for these, is there a diffinertive best one for a 998

Sure the remap will ocour in the future, really don't like the PCIII if for nothing else its more weight going on the bike, ive expierinced first hand reliability issues with these things so it all sort of goes against all the other modifications, but i think it can wait for the moment maybe if i found some cams cheap but im sure even then it still cost a fortune changing em, theres a question would the heads need to come off to do them or could it be done in situ and am i right head gaskets are a few hundred quid on these bikes

Just had the fairing bracket turn up, thought id be waiting ages for that ordered it i think on bank holiday monday and its here thursday morning, that was an ebay item from Germany so good there
    IMG_0112.jpg
I've heard from the guy i bought the undertray of, seems theres a mix up because he's on holiday, ive got to send this one back recorded delivery and he will get another sent out P.I.T.A but these things happen I guess, The quality looks good came from Carbon Moto IMG_0113.jpg IMG_0114.jpg
But going back, so i think next post will be fitting the fairing bracket, Only thing im thinking here is what fixings to use to hold the fairing to it with, i like the dzus fixings but not sure how suitable they will be

  19. ^^ SRS race fairing stays come with flats on them to do just that and having used one in the past I can say it works just as well as any other fixing method.
