Air filters????? its a track bike. Mine has run with none for 4 years. Mesh over the fairing intakes, and spray some chain lube down the ducts to catch shite.
No restriction and no weight, really considering the millage ill be putting on it should make any difference im sold on the no filter option
no airfilters!!, ur braver (or probably a better rider) than me, bin it in the sand/gravel and it could easily be goodnight for one of your cylinders
Actually seen this happen, strangely to a 998, air filter tube smashed to pieces amongst many other bits in a crash at Paddock Bend at Brands, whole right hand side of bike totalled, it was a big mess. I bought some of what was left of the front of it and it's amazing where gravel can get in to. You could always consider in airbox filters.
from my investigations these or these look like the best bet for in air box types, you lose a bit of airbox volume but you can use any intake tubes u like i have this type (but made by JHP) on my bike and while its an effective filter i have had a few knowledgeable mechanics tell me i'm losing power due to the amount of airbox volume it takes up
I had lots of bits turn up today, petrol cap, dzus fastners, the fairing bracket, ignition switch, some screws for the screen and some wellnuts I really wanted to get the fairing mounted and i know this is going to be a mission, specialy as its not the right one for this bike, But as i had got the fairing bracket, i thought this would be best thing to attack Tonights progress a has been a bit slow, removed the headlight housing and clocks, pleased to see how easy speedo comes away from the rest of the clocks, discovered a damaged section of wiring that leads to what i think is the MAP sensor I had laid this bike up for a while because it started running really ruff almost like on one cylinder, i was about to put it into a garage near me as didn't have time to investigate problem but day before it was due to go i put new battery and changed the fuel as old battery wasn't charging and bike had been sitting around for a long time, anyway tried the bike and was running fine, so i put it down to bad fuel or bad battery, but after seeing the exposed wires to that sensor i'm thinking this is more likly cause of the problem as it was barley running and then fine So moving on fitted the German fairing bracket, got to say im not impressed, i only got it to save myself the time in making one, I would have thought the holes for the air Tubes and mirror stay would be as the original light unit, but there way off, i think to give myself half a chance at getting my fairing in place Im going to have to chop it about a bit I temporarily rigged up the ignition switch to make sure everything still works gauges and oil warning lights wise, which they do and bike starts ok, so everything ok that ive removed not causing any problems Fitted fuel cap, curious as to what the little rubber fitting is on the tank, as this just gets squashed against the new caps outer body, doesn't marry up with any vent holes, so not really sure what it was supposed to be doing Heres the pics
The rubber part in the tank is a breather extension that fits under the standard tank cap, it's not used on the race filler caps I have fitted and I would imagine yours is no different. Race braces are a bit notorious for not fitting well I have fitted various makes over the years and some are way out, you will need to bend it into shape, I used an alloy ladder!!!! last time and bent mine to shape around that as it was the same material and it had the right sections so as not to mar the metal. Finally quite some years ago I bought a mono carbon fibre undertray for my 998 and the only difference was the slightly wider shape and lack of rear footrest cutouts, so I had to cut it down using the bip undertray as a template, the mounting points were exactly the same though. Possibly the subframe for the P8 ECU has different mounting points, I cannot see why though. I'd go for the BMC airfilters, very well made and the filters are replaceable.
The fairing bracket is annoying , I could have made one but thought id save some time buying the german one, very poor that they cant produce something with all the mounts in the right place, live and learn, still ill bend it where i can and i will probably alter the ears anyway so I can use dzus fixings, need a little lug to mount the map sensor too or find an alternative position for it
buy cheap buy twice............the pierobon one fits perfickt! What are you fabricating in the work shop there?
Seems the rear holes are the same, but on my subframe the front mounts are on the outside where the material is cut away for foot rest, i tried sending old one back yesterday that was a waste of time, post office couldnt find the address on there system, bloddy mission grr
I made one up using angle aluminium and then used a pillar drill and a Dremel to cut out the shape of the air flow sensor, I used the original bolts and it mounted pretty much like the original does on the headlamp holder bracket, this was on a 748 and I know the 998 uses an (air?) pressure sensor so it will be a different shape. I fixed it to one of the bolts that holds the race brace to the frame at the front main tube. It's right out of the way and just below the instrument plate, very safe if you crash. The wire also stretched quite happily so it didn't have to be extended.
Got to say it was nut to a standard i would expect I run my own fabrication and sheet metal company, primarily serving the lift/elevator industry I need to try and convince my customers to use titanium and carbon fiber for there lifts
Fix the MAP sensor in one of the airtubes. Make a slot in the iartube and poke the sensor bit through and secure with silicone or two little self tappers.
Got my 2002 998s mono out today, so will get a few pics of the subframe and undrseat tray taken and posted at lunch, if it helps any.
Yeah id be interested to see, Im not sure what the subframe came off it was years ago when i bought it, looking at the Pierobon web site they make one and that shows the front mounts on the outside of the frame the same as how mine are on the single seat unit, Im just assuming that all the mono seat units are all like this and the biposta has them inside
Would be a nice place in the air tube as would stop the cable getting damaged but i would have thought the pressures in the airtube when riding would throw the reading out due to mild ram air effect the faster you went Or is that what your trying to do hmmm interesting
