Mr Red, sir. Obviously your opinion is hugely valued. Since starting this thread, I've picked up a lot of information and that SPS does look increasingly over priced. But apart from the black wheels, the SP looks standard to me. What puts you off? If it's the price, what would you say is a decent value?
From a purists point of view then the following. Exhaust, Heat Shield, Airbox, Mirrors, Seat. They are not how the original bike was when it left the showroom. Other debatable points are the clutch, it doesn't use the alloy cover that these had, it runs an open clutch. Bar ends and rear sprocket have been changed for non stock as has the clutch slave and it has frame plugs. These could be classed as extras and even desirable but I fail to see how you can ask £7,000 for a bike like this. If I sold mine I would be asking £5,250 for it at most and it would be 100% original and newer, which is how most people seem to want this particular model and the more stock the better. I appreciate the market determines value but there seem to be some that are asking more than they are worth, purely my opinion on that. See my post about the £25,000!! one up for sale By the way my bike is definitely not for sale as I have had a few enquiries already.
I think you're describing the SPS. I agree that 7 grand is way too much for that. I was more interested in what puts you off the SP. I'd really like your opinion.
Yes, apologies for that I should have menntioned it was the SPS that seemed least original. Ok I'll have a look at that
This is the way I see it. Clearly a cleaner bike, it's clear that some parts have been cleaned up better than they would have looked new, hoses for example. Black wheels are a big standout, it has a hugger, clutch cover, sprocket cover all in carbonfibre, good if it comes with the originals especially the clutch cover as that should be alloy and is not the same as a stock bip. Frame plugs are not stock but no big deal. It does have polished heel guards and heat shield which really should have been left as they are. The only two points that could be of concern is that it has the wrong screws in the crank end cover plate on the nearside, have they been drilled and retapped or just replaced. A bit more worrying if they had been retapped to a bigger size. Also there is a Brembo sticker on the swinging which could be hiding a mark or graze to the finish on the arm. Plus point is that it is shown on a Gubellini stand which is the best stand for these single sided swing arm bikes as they are very strong. You would want that with the bike. So all in all a nice bike, if you like the mods then it could be worth a thought. If you are a purist then there would be a bit of work to be done, mostly the wheels and the polished parts. I still don't think it's quite worth the money though.
That's an epic eye for detail. You should work in forensics. Although I did notice the Brembo sticker. Apparently the dealer had a chap coming back to him about it yesterday afternoon. If it's still available, I'll ask him more about it.
Sorry also forgot the original bike did not have Termi stickers they were plain carbonfibre. If you really want it and you can get the price down fair enough, it's a nice enough bike but not realistically priced in my opinion. It is an SP and not an SPS, more sold in the UK and it doesn't have Pankl Titanium rods only Pankl steel rods.
I'd ring him for an update and sound interested but not pushy or desperate. Say you have others to see.
To be fair it was quite decent, but I still think it is\was overpriced. I have had several people contact me about my SPS and I suspect because it's the "summer" prices are on the up, in my opinion for no real good reason. Keep trying and don't give up, they are out there just don't be in a rush if you really want an SP or an SPS. If you don't then go for a 996/998, a nice bike if you get a good one. Different sort of power delivery but it depends what you are looking for.
Well I've had a couple of big twins in the past and I did quite like the large servings of mid range torque, but I do fancy something a little more involved, and I'm more than happy to lose a bit of outright performance.
Then an SP, SPS or 748R is probably what you want, personally I love em. Very involving if you can get to ride them a bit harder.
Theres a yellow 748R (ohlins model) on eBay for 5000. Looks not too bad, needs a new wing mirror and a good clean. 9999miles but seller has listed trip mileage at 8705 (doh) ducati 748r motorbike yellow | eBay
Yeah, I saw that. Warning bells going off on several fronts. 1. Dirty bike says it hasn't been cared for. 2. Cracked mirror. Could just have been caught on something, I suppose. 3. Selling it for a mate who's moved abroad? Might be a good excuse not to be able to answer any awkward questions. Or I might just be cynical.
Fair points.. Looks like theres some history with it. If the owner has gone "aboard" it could have been sat it someones garage. If that is a legit excuse the seller probably doesn't know much. They couldn't read the clocks to be fair. Not every one cares for stuff to the finesse of others. I'd defy look into it if it were me. Took me many miles and months to find my 748R. I'd check the history with a fine tooth comb to make sure belts and and oils been done consistently in the past and check the engine numbers. Not sure why they put cracked...I'd more say snapped in half
Reasonably priced for what it is. I've seen them go for low 4's on Cat D's to 6500+ for nice examples in the last 8 months. There's one on for 9000 but thats too high considering its had everything changed.. You can get lucky with anything and unlucky also. One saving grace with the R is that if you do blow the motor there are several later generation engines that will fit as replacements. I think the testastretta engines will fit. Some of the other guys on here are super knowledgeable on that stuff. I have the 2001 R, engine failure is my biggest worry but there's always a plan B
