A Flat Pack House/ My New Job

  1. Re the galv screw pilings.
They were introduced to the building trade here but I have never seen or heard of them since.
Part of the integrity of a concrete footing is just sheer downforce by mass. Hard to engineer that out maybe...
I am a big fan of concrete, it is cheap, strong and available. You also have the opportunity to shape it, level it, colour it and use it as thermal mass depending on design. of course I have also seen some hideous examples of concrete buildings where one persons idea of raw industrial beauty just looks like an old pillar box. Opinions eh?

  10. another week in and im absolutely shattered again! we were to stay over the weekend and carry on but me workmate had to get back to get meds for his old man, the chemist short changed him.
anyhu, as you can see, we got the upper wall panels (gable ends) up, beams up and most of the roof.
the beams were fun! one of em is just under 9 mtrs 400mm x 90mm and a lil bit heavy for 3 guys!
i said earlier that the building was just over 10 mtrs long but that is just the living space, its actually 13.6 mtrs if you include the area that is to have decking. we should include that as the roof and walls extend that far!!!
the roof panels were bloody hard work, initially made alot harder by the young chap who is supposed to be advising us on the build coming up with some crazy ideas that i had to veto.
turns out that although he has built many of these, this is the first he has done whit a sip roof!!! we did better yesterday with 2 of us than we did thursday with 3!
the company was supposed to supply scaffold but didnt so i had to make up platforms inside and out to get the job done. that wasted the best part of a day for me which i aint to happy about. we were lacking materials for this so on the interior i had to disassemble and move stuff in between throwing up the roof panels but it was that or grind to a halt.
i didnt take any pics end of yesterday but the roof is nearly all up save the outdoor area which will require either a 3rd man or a way better platform set up.
im not so keen on the sip roof, its really hard work and due to the nature of how the panels are made and go together its impossible to keep things running true so my soffit is 170mm at one end and 190 at the other.
now i will have to ping a line and cut the panels back to make things right... no walk in the park!!!!
roof tiles are to turn up monday but i doubt we will start on em till tuesday now....

  11. Did the gables come with the angled sips panels pre cut or did you cut the angle on site?

  12. Fuckin hell! That looks like hard work alright! So what does it have for cladding on the outside and inside of the walls?
Hope you're getting paid well for all this mate....only say that because when I was building similar here, and the company was scrimping like you are saying re scaffolding, I was getting paid fuck all...was at the arse end of the last big recession we had tho.

  13. we cut the angels in the workshop before it was delivered to site. its easier to do it this way as we have to router out the insulation to accommodate the top plate, hard to do on site.
in the workshop we have a spindle molder with the correct blade for doing this.

  14. on the outside it will be a breathable membrane then vertical battens then wooden weatherboards. all the electrics will be run from the outside and drilled through at the correct positions (hopefully!) the the cladding goes on.
inside it is just the foil vapor barrier then plasterboard.

  15. im kinda really unsure what im getting paid!!! its price work and as im unfamiliar with a lot of this building process im pretty much taking a leap of faith and trusting that the price they put forward is realistic. tbh, with things they way they are atm and probably only to get worse in the building game here, im probably lucky to have any work at all. so with that i mind, i will work for a lesser than normal rate for now (if thats how it pans out) and reassess the situation after this project.
