1200 Accidental Timing Belt "guide Pulley" Damage

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by AirCon, Jul 24, 2014.

  1. Given my induction and exhaust note I don't recall any abnormal noise or performance.
If it wasn't due a big service I would have ended up with a broken engine.

  2. Biot, sounds like one of your headers is blowing. Have a look around for tell tale signs of leakage.

  3. UPS are winging their way with my new pullies...if they arrive this afternoon or tomorrow morning I might have a my machine back for the weekend. :)

  4. Ta JW, will look Saturday. Sounds like a Budgie on speed chirping away. Has never made that noise before.

  5. You have started to worry me so today I took off the belt covers and took a good look at the belts and pulleys. They look perfect, so I'm now reassured. But I don't regret looking!

  6. OK. I now have my bike back and have seen the damage.
Only the rear of the belt touches these pullies.
One of the belts has a very sharp piece of the pulley embedded into it.
Examination under magnification clearly shows its the same material as the pulley coating/anodise.
Either something has chiped the pulley causing a metal flake to embed into the belt or it's just failed.
I actually believe something chipped the pulley.
This metal flake has cut the surface of the pullies in a parallel line, in turn thus has scored the belt.
I don't think it would have caused a failure soon, but you would want it changed.

My verdict: accidental damage to pulley, by object unknown.

May be something forced into the casing while passing through a flood or similar.

  7. I sometimes hear screaming and my eyes water, with a dull ache from the sides of my mouth.
Then I just realise the noise is me have a great time....living the dream.

  8. Photos? ;-)

  9. Went to garage this morning; bike turns over but won't fire up. No dash error lights or obvious leaks/stains on engine. Now waiting for recovery AGAIN!!!
Will update when know why it's dead. :Arghh:

  10. Biot, you mentioned before about a noise you had before when you accelerated, like a high pitch noise..? Now your bike won't start from cold?

You may have a large air leak somewhere on the induction side, vac pipe split or come off?? Now preventing your bike from starting? Running to weak, when it needs to run richer for a cold start

Might be worth checking round all your hoses, and check if they are all intact!

    Hope this helps

  11. Thanks Boomer. Now with local Ducati Droids. Will post when they get back to me. Although they are now super busy as it's summer :Arghh:
It's never in it's 3 years of life not started first time. Did over 160 miles 2 up on it 2 days ago. Parked it up in garage, wheeled it out this morning. Fired up at first stab of button, put helmet on and gloves then bike cut out and wouldn't re start!!!!!!!

  12. Not quite sure what I was looking for but all looks ok to me..........argh! rusty bits!

15K service just 3000 miles or so ago, belt looks ok??......

  13. All looks good.....very very clean.

    I'm photo-ing now.

  14. How do I add pictures again...don't think i've done it on this new site.
It seems to want me to put the pictures on the internet first.

  15. Drag n drop...I checked the "How to section", when in doubt RTBM.

  16. I really need to play around with lenses on my digital SLR and lighting.
    Sorry for the quick pics.

  17. Actually Andy your pullies are really pitted. My are dead smooth apart from the scratch/track. Yours look very rough. Also note you've got completely different numbers to mine.

  18. No missing that sort of defect/damage......no sign of anything embedded in the belt?

Not so smooth faces of my tension rollers.....hmmmm, not sure that would be any issue as the rollers rotate i.e. the belt is not 'dragged' across the surface - input from an 'expert' would be good here. Why are they different to yours and the different ID numbers....?? Have you looked at the new rollers fitted to your bike now.
I'll get my magnifying glass out (lol) later and make a note of the numbering.

    ......improved one for you :D

  19. Next time I get it apart I'll make note.
I think a rough surface may heat the belt a little.
As you say input from an expert.

In your improved photo you can just make our the little hole that held the pulley particle.

  20. Just flash photography effect........pulley/roller surfaces actually smooth as can be to the touch.

The ID numbers on the two tensioner rollers:
    Top; iMi 1010268
    Bottom; iMi 1011846
....can't see anything on the belt.
The 15k service was done by Louigi Moto so on the basis of their reputation I'd expect nothing but perfection - I do wonder if the tension rollers at least are not genuine Ducati items, the iMi has the appearance of a brand logo - however Google searches come up blank.

On closer inspection I've noticed a few apparently random shiny spots on the toothed timing belt rollers.......normal??

I presume that when your bike was in the vertical cylinder belt system was checked?
