Surely, if you got a very small engine, 25cc maybe, and put it into an electric bike, the engine could charge the batteries, meaning fewer batteries and therefore less weight, you'd get at least 300mpg from the mini motor and maybe 200 mile range from the batteries. The motor wouldn't weigh owt, being basically just a piston, crank and output shaft, stick half a gallon of lpg under the seat somewhere and away you go. I think I've just solved the fuel crisis
Yep, use a small generator to charge one battery while the bike runs on another. Then switch over. The small Honda generators knock out 700w don't they? Should be enough. Just. Personally, I prefer a dirty great diesel bike that has comparable torque to a superbike & yet still gives a 550 mile range on one tank. It also scares the neighbours when I start it & eats shiney new GS riders for breakfast
My recent foray around the Pyrenees resulted in an average of 52mpg on my 'wide load' GT. just me and the luggage. One tank did 170 before the light came on. How ducati have managed to make a mega fast bike this economical is a mystery
When I lost the stupid exhaust valve my mpg went up to around 42-44 mpg from around 38 mpg before! What gets to me is how governments all want us to think green yet they force us to use airflow restrictors that do exactly the opposite..... Probably because the more fuel u use the more taxes they earn.....not that I'm cynical in any way Mpg important to me cause I hate the whole filling up saga.....I'd rather be riding! PS best economy at 60-70 miles/hour.....cold starts also slurp a lot of fuel!
You're spot on Kirky, a 200 or more mile range is much more relaxing while touring in Europe. I was with a bunch of others this year and while my GS (not GSA) was regularly showing 250+ range to empty others were anxious to get petrol when they were at 150 miles, especially on a Sunday and off the motorways. It was a bleeding nuisance actually making diversions off route to find fuel for them. One ran out. My Euro touring is now finished and the GS is sold and replaced by a Diavel for local rides and I can already see the difference in fuel consumption but it doesn't matter now for local rides.
Never really had a problem with range. Being a smoker, I'm looking for a fag break at around 80-90 miles anyway. My brother's been all over Europe on his 998 and 1098, my TL1000 had a pitiful range too, and we've only ever run out of fuel once - and I was going fast enough that I coasted all the way to the garage anyway. If that bloke Sanders can circumnavigate the globe on an R1, I reckon I should just be able to cross France without sucking the tank inside out...
Went out today, naked, so no more wide load. Got it down to indicated 45mpg, is that more acceptable?
