Alternative To Polished Pipes

  1. Yeah right slave to fashion me................LOL

I got the QD's for the 1098 about that time and they were in the process of bringing out the black end cans. I tried to get a set but communications could be a bit flaky. I've toyed with the idea of polishing the endcaps but never really got around to it (probably never will). The Termis were replaced when the bike fell off the sidestand and onto the Guzzi................me culpa.

The Guzzi had a little chip on it, the 1098 had a fist sized hole in one of the Termis. Rather than just replace one can, which would've look odd, I got the QDs for a little more than one Termi can.

Good Quality, but they don't have that Termi Boom which I miss, however overall very pleased with them, the weave and finish is way better than the Termis (which let face it would not be very hard).

  2. Try nickel plating.....cheaper than chrome (it's what goes on underneath chrome) and it looks as though the pipes got really hot....

  3. I've been told by a knowledgeable old codger that welder's pickling paste does a bang up job of cleaning pipes, can anyone verify? My Termi's have held up over the years, but I would like to smarten up the ST's headers.

  4. That was on another polishing thread about a year back. Apparently it goes a slightly shade/colour but I can't remember exactly. I had a dig round eBay but was coming up a little pricey for my tastes.

I find a grey Scottish pad and paraffin works well to start with, then get the mops out. But I'm still learning, there seems a lot of "trial and error" to find what works for you.

One thing for sure, it's mucky, time consuming and requires effort. Very satisfying when finished.

  5. That SF on the American forum has to be the worst looking SF on the planet. White wheels, chrome exhaust and the cans, looks hideous in total. The Yanks do love a bit of chrome, makes sense now.

  6. I agree. I don't like it either. Particularly the white wheels. I only posted it as an example of what the Cermakrome finish might look like.
What I do like is the full decat system in polished titanium that Austin Racing make for the 1290 Superduke. After a few heat cycles the pipes go blue.
I'm not convinced by the performance capabilities of the Termi system on the SF, nor of the original pipe come to that. Id love an AR full system in blued titanium for the SF topped with an GP2 carbon can.

Shame they don't make s full system for the SF. I might enquire about the possibility of a one-off but I expect it would be astronomically expensive.

  7. I've got my zorst back from Performance 1 Coatings and a really nice job they've done! I'm very happy with the finish on the pipes and at a cost of £154 for all the pipes, four heat shields and even the heads of the screws that hold on the heatshields I'm well impressed. They are a lot cheaper that some of the other quotes I received.
Here are a couple of before and after photos.
Obviously I can't yet say how they will stand up to wear and the general crud that is thrown at exhausts but so far I'm impressed with the company and they seem nice guys to. Before.JPG After.JPG

  8. Looks great, thats me sold.

  9. Possibly not as much as you'd think but due to Rich's workload it might be a non-starter. Ask him, as I've mentioned before he's quite amicable to chat with.
But, be aware, all AR systems start off as flat sheet not bought-in tube and they are all hand built. I've watched them being made and the work that goes into one is bewildering.!
