1098 Another Cracked Speedo Display!

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by DRR117, Mar 9, 2017.

  1. The screen is dark near the rear of the clocks but quickly turns clear. But for what ever reason I naturally never left the clocks exposed when I park edthe bike up outside, I always stick my gloves over it to avoid direct sunlight. The cracks actually appeared on the clocks after being sat in a dark insulated garage.

  2. Yeah good shout that. I might do that but then I'm not sure what sort of hassle I'll get with putting the mileage correct etc...

  3. On the panigale the ecu saves the mileage. But not sure on 1098 but mot's will prove mileage anyway if used ones is much different.
Mine cracked in the garage as well. Think it's to do with the heat from the dash and then cooling too quick.

  4. Look on the bright side ....in 3 years all the parts will be new again!

  5. I've never read so much bollox in all my life! The cracked dash will be the result of the double bubble. I have seen dozens of bikes (all manufacturers, and models inc Japs) that have suffered from this issue.

And the fact that Ducati's get stone chips when you're out for a ride? How is that Ducati's fault? Can I claim for all the stone chips on my car from Ducati too? Sounds like a plan!

Give your head a shake ffs.

  6. Firstly my ducati doesn't have a double bubble screen on. And secondly who paints the fairings? Skoda?
I think you need to give your own head a shake pal.

  7. If you can find a good unit, they're dead easy to take apart. You can just swap the front over and retain your internals so to speak. I had the entire dash unit fail on me the day i got my 848 and being a serial tinkerer, I've become quite adept at removing the display. It's 5 or 6 little torx screws and you can split the casing and swap it over with no issues.

Interesting to hear the reliability woes of others. I've covered a good 2000 miles on mine since i got it last summer and bar the dash unit which the dealer replaced under their warranty, it's been perfect. Although i've probably jinxed myself now!

  8. Really?? in that case the double bubble fitted to my bike has x-ray power and is able to transmit the UV light onto the dash screen through my gloves! or through a garage roof with no sky light! As I said whenever the bike is at home it's kept in my dark garage which also happens to be at stable temperature. Also, when the bike is out and about (1 day per week) other than when I'm riding it the dash is covered by my gloves. Either the plastic has broken down/ degraded or I have a little troll with a toffee hammer who comes out at night in my garage, boy he must have the horn for smashing Ducati screens! J

If you do some searching about online it's very evident that this is a problem that pretty much affects every owner of the 1098 /1198 at some stage of ownership.

I agree the stone chips comment by me was a bit of a dig because I'm p@ssed at Ducati for charging so much for a replacement display screen. But in reality most newer bikes are likely to be susceptible to picking up stone chips easier because the paints being used are not so clever, the paint are often water based and not very hardy! We can blame that on the eco warriors of this world wanting to make everything environmentally friendly.

I respect that you are an admin, but surely you’d have to be a very clever person to diagnose what caused the problem with my dash display effectively blindfolded! Also how do you explain the people that have the same issues whilst having the OEM wind shield fitted?

Oh I do love it when people use forums to flex their muscles, I knew it wouldn’t be long before someone appeared and started to get mouthy. Best thing is if you don’t have anything worthwhile to bring to a conversation, simply don’t post anything!

  9. Sadly, finding a good unit isn't the problem, it's finding one that isn't going to cost the same as a return flight to the USA :-/ I'm more than confident that I can open the existing unit up and switch out the front cover. Given that the part is seperate, as in the front half of the unit surround and screen is one (probably an inexpensive part to manufacture) I find it hard to swallow that who ever made them for Ducati didn't have the foresight to make a batch of spares.

  10. Digitek make the dash and they did supply Ducati with spare fronts, but they are not offered as a spare, just supplied to a few dealers for warranty purposes whilst the bike was still in production. Digitek will not talk to you direct.

How bad is yours cracked ? I have my original front as a spare front with light crazing at the edges which I was keeping in case my replacement failed big time but I might pass it on if yours is bad enough.

  11. Thanks for commenting - Unfortunatley mine has gone quite bad, I can take a photo later when I get home. It's bad enough to really distract the eye when looking / glancing at it :-(

Even if a Ducati dealer would sell a new replacement front for £100 I'd be far less dissatisfied. But so far the complete ignorance of Ducati UK, and the lack of
acknowledgment of this being a common problem by Motorapido drives me to distraction.

    Robbing b@st@rds!

  12. I can't even find a website for 'Digitek' Perhaps I can speak to someone there, you never know they might make an exception. (prob not, but worth a go)

  13. My comment about the double bubble is based on personal experience and knowledge of dozens that this has happened to. It doesn't necessarily happen whilst you are in the blazing sunshine but happens when the bike is put away and its cooling down. If you dont believe me I don't really care. But being from a manufacturing and design background I just hate it when people think there is an inherent problem with a product and completely dismiss the fact that they may have had something to do with it.

There is a reason why manufacturers don't fit double bubbles as standard. Don't you think that that could be it???

  14. Have you still got jet lag El Tornado? :Wideyed: Or have The Toon spoilt your day? :p

  15. The odometer reading is stored in the dash on the 848/1098/1198. I have 2 dashes for my 1098R and the mileage changes depending on which dash is plugged in.

  16. Just for the record, my bike has and has never had a double bubble screen. but I'm sure it's a contributing factor in some cases.

Pretty sure it's temp changes causing expansion and contraction by whatever process that comes about, direct sunlight, screen or in my case a spray cleaner on a warm day.

  17. I don't dissagree that perhaps some double bubble screens can help cause the issue, but the screen on mine was fitted by Moto Rapido from new, it's not a cheap item it's an expensive double bubble which actually fades to black behind the rear of the clocks so it's not in direct sunlight. The cracks appeared whilst in the garage and at least 1 week after it had already cooled down.

It's not fiction if you read online most owners experience this fault even whilst running the STD OEM screen! The plastic degrades and fails due to being exposed to air, I speak from experience as I am familier with how certain materials break down due to being involved in the relic process of musical instruments. I also have a good background of manufacturing & engineering.

For example 'Celluloid' after many years will actually distort, split and discolour.

  18. Thats just showing off ;-) I don't suppose you want to sell one?
